About The Position

Requirements

• Graduate of a nursing school.
• At least 1 year of clinical experience; RNs with less than 12 months of experience will complete the new graduate requirements.
• California Registered Nurse (RN) license from the California Board of Registered Nursing.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Professional (AHA BLS Healthcare) certification.
• Ability to independently perform the nursing process through individualized assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care.
• Ability to provide safe nursing care in complex situations, demonstrate competency in unit skills and some advanced skills, and recognize and manage potential complications.
• Ability to organize and prioritize workload, manage emergency situations, and use complex problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
• Ability to coordinate and delegate care, teach and coach patients, families, and team members, and use common equipment and medications safely.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct and indirect nursing services to patients and families.
• Coordinate patient care with patients, families, and multidisciplinary team members using systematic planning and timely communication.
• Assess patients, identify actual or potential risks, develop individualized plans of care, implement interventions, and evaluate and adjust care as needs change.
• Recognize patient diagnoses, complications, and inconsistencies in care, and use critical thinking to manage complex patient situations.
• Make appropriate referrals based on initial and ongoing assessments and evaluations.
• Provide safe, therapeutic, efficient care for patients with complex needs, including needs related to multi-system disease or treatment complications.
• Document care comprehensively according to department and entity guidelines, policies, and procedures.
• Delegate and assign care appropriately, communicate expectations, determine required supervision, and follow up to ensure delegated tasks are completed.
• Assess the appropriateness of physician orders and question orders when appropriate.
• Support coworkers, provide constructive feedback, help improve performance, and share unit-specific information with students, float staff, and registry personnel.
• Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families, adapt interventions to social and cultural needs, and advocate for patients.
• Provide age-appropriate patient and family education, coordinate transfer and discharge planning and teaching, and contribute to patient education materials.
• Coordinate care delivered by other members of the care team and nursing staff; may serve as relief charge nurse and assist with preceptorship or professional development.
• Use common equipment and medications safely and consult others when unfamiliar.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives, unit activities, and committees as appropriate, and comply with regulatory and accreditation standards.
• Teach skills as necessary and mentor others to improve clinical practice.
