About The Position

The UA Little Rock Center for Arkansas History and Culture seeks a skilled, collaborative Lead Project Archivist to arrange, describe, and preserve the Heifer International records. This is a full-time, on-site, term-limited position with an anticipated three-year duration. The Lead Project Archivist will manage a 2-3 person processing team and collaborate with the Head Archivist to implement processing and digitization plans. This position is well-suited to a more experienced archival professional seeking a focused project role. Headquartered in Little Rock, Heifer International is a global nonprofit whose mission is to end hunger and poverty by supporting local farmers and their communities. The Heifer International records, dating from the 1940s to the 1990s, total approximately 800 boxes. Materials include correspondence, annual reports, shipping records, project reports, financial records, campaign materials, magazines and catalogs, scrapbooks, photographic slides and negatives, reel-to-reel tapes, VHS tapes, hard drives, computer disks, and artifacts. This collection will provide insight into understanding Arkansas’s history and its connections to the world. This is a 12-month grant-funded position. Continued employment is contingent upon the availability of annual grant funding.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in information and library science or related field
  • Two or more years of experience processing archival materials in a variety of formats
  • Experience writing finding aids
  • Demonstrated experience using best practices to arrange and describe archival collections
  • Knowledge of processing hybrid collections
  • Understanding of privacy, safe handling, confidentiality, copyright, and use issues in an archival setting
  • Thorough knowledge of archival standards and vocabularies, including EAD and DACS
  • Ability to establish priorities, set and meet goals and deadlines, and manage project schedules
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently or as a member of a team
  • Proof of legal authority to work in the United States on the first day of employment

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated record of successful project management and supervisory experience
  • Professional experience in an academic or research library, special collections repository, or other relevant setting
  • Experience using ArchivesSpace
  • Experience with digital asset management systems, including ArchivesSpace and CONTENTdm

Responsibilities

  • Process the Heifer International records. This includes developing a processing plan, researching collection items for identification, arranging and describing materials, rehousing materials for preservation, and creating a DACS-compliant finding aid
  • Supervise 2-3 project archivists and graduate assistants (e.g., organizing workload, delegating responsibility, providing guidance and direction)
  • Create and maintain an achievable timeline for the project
  • Manage project documentation, such as progress reports and lead update meetings
  • Select and digitize physical materials and write metadata according to institutional standards
  • Monitor access to sensitive or restricted materials, ensuring compliance with privacy and security protocols
  • Consult and collaborate with CAHC archivists as needed to ensure appropriate processing of varying formats
  • Participate in outreach activities to promote the collection
  • Assist with internal and external research requests related to the collection
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
