About The Position

As a Principal Architect on Akamai’s Cloud Technology Group and CTO’s team, you will lead the evolution of the company’s cloud infrastructure and platform services. You will drive initiatives across engineering teams and design foundational solutions that support Akamai’s future cloud products. The role combines high-level technical leadership with hands-on design as needed to deliver the cloud platform roadmap. Akamai’s Cloud Technology Group designs, builds, maintains, and operates its global Cloud and CDN platforms. Its technologies underpin Akamai products, with an emphasis on consistent security, reliability, and availability. Akamai’s distributed platform spans cloud and edge services, security, content delivery, and AI.

Requirements

  • 12 years of relevant experience and a bachelor's degree or equivalent.
  • Extensive experience developing and documenting architectures for large-scale distributed systems.
  • Solid experience with high-availability software systems and methods for achieving service security, reliability, and operability objectives.
  • Working knowledge of Internet protocols, including routing, TCP/IP, DNS, and HTTP, and computer security technologies, including TLS, PKI, and VPN.
  • Expertise in cloud workload management for containers, virtual machines, and similar workloads, and in control-plane paradigms such as push, pull, segmentation, and reconciliation.
  • Extensive understanding of SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS, with experience in one or more public cloud offerings.
  • Experience evaluating and justifying technology choices.
  • Experience modernizing and refactoring system designs to achieve enterprise-grade scalability, reliability, and observability.

Responsibilities

  • Identify critical improvements for inclusion in the cloud platform roadmap.
  • Collaborate with solution-specific architects across engineering to define architectures that support a unified cloud platform vision.
  • Socialize and build consensus around long-term technical strategy decisions across product lines and teams.
  • Engage with external partners and company stakeholders to achieve platform evolution goals.
  • Work with engineering counterparts to align cloud platform architecture with other product goals.
  • Provide technical leadership through high-level guidance and hands-on design as needed to execute the cloud platform roadmap.
  • Develop and document architectures for large-scale distributed systems.
  • Evaluate and justify technology choices.
  • Modernize and refactor system designs to align with enterprise-grade scalability, reliability, and observability.
