About The Position

Requirements

• U.S. citizenship, subject to the stated exception for non-citizens when qualified citizens cannot be recruited under VA policy.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• One year of education above high school with courses related to the Nursing Assistant occupation, or completion of an intensive specialized occupation-related Nursing Assistant course of less than one year, subject to the stated GS-3 qualification provisions.
• For GS-4: one year of specialized Nursing Assistant or other medical-field experience performing technical and nursing skills, or successful completion of two years of relevant post-high-school study.
• For GS-5: one year of progressively responsible experience equivalent to GS-4, or a qualifying four-year course of study or bachelor’s degree as described in the announcement.
• Ability to provide a range of patient or resident care and contribute to care plans and recovery.
• Ability to observe patients’ physical or emotional status and refer deviations or problems to a supervisor in a timely manner.
• Ability to use equipment, materials, and supplies in basic diagnostic and treatment procedures.
• Ability to communicate effectively with patients, residents, families, and health professionals.
• Ability to recognize and respond to changes in patient condition and emergent care situations.
• Ability to perform the physical demands of the position, including heavy lifting and carrying of 45 pounds or more; prolonged pulling, pushing, walking, standing, and bending; reaching above the shoulders; kneeling; and use of both hands and legs.
• Ability to meet visual acuity, hearing, speech, and manual dexterity requirements and to work effectively in stressful situations with shifting priorities.
• Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as TB screening or testing, and participate in the seasonal influenza vaccination program.
• Selected applicants are subject to background and security investigation, pre-employment drug screening, onboarding requirements, and a one- or two-year trial period.

Responsibilities

• Assist with the full range of nursing care for patients and residents with physical or behavioral needs under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse.
• Provide direct care to complex Veterans and assist with activities of daily living in support of treatment, recovery, and wellness.
• Use a glucose-monitoring machine to obtain readings and refer deviations to appropriate health care staff.
• Observe changes in patients’ or residents’ condition, including behavior, mood, skin color, and appetite, and respond within the assigned role by notifying appropriate nursing personnel.
• Document care provided, observations, patient responses, and intake and output using appropriate forms, tools, or chart formats; report deviations promptly and accurately.
• Provide tracheostomy care, including suctioning.
• Perform procedures within scope of practice and in accordance with policies and standard procedures, including enemas, catheterization, colostomy care, skin care, simple dressing changes, and application of braces and prosthetic devices.
• Assist in emergent care situations while awaiting assistance, such as recognizing the need for basic life support, controlling bleeding, and assisting during behavioral crises.
• Work with patients and residents in small-group activities consistent with their treatment plans; respect autonomy and promote independence through respectful interactions, limit setting, and individualized treatment.
• Provide patient information to the treatment team and participate in treatment-planning and resident-care meetings.
• Use equipment to promote patient self-care.
• Maintain a clean and safe environment by removing defective equipment, reporting hazards, observing safety regulations, supporting infection control, and using proper aseptic technique.
• Manage patient behavior and request assistance from other health care team members when needed.
• Serve as a preceptor and mentor to other Nursing Assistants, including helping coordinate orientation and assessing practical experience in the clinical setting.
