About The Position

The Behavioral Health Education Specialist II provides direct patient care by developing rapport with patients, facilitating patient/caregiver safety, gathering critical data to inform the treatment team in the development of the treatment and education plan of care, and leading the implementation of interventions and curriculum as recommended by the multi-disciplinary treatment team. This role is furthered by providing individual, trauma informed, supportive contacts to patients that focus on validating negative feelings, offering strategies for coping, building self-esteem, development of skills, and initial assessment of immediate risk to self and others. The Behavioral Health Education Specialist II shows competency of IEP implementation, curriculum creation and implementation, and the ability to lead the learning environment independently.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, sociology, family studies, or related field (education is verified)
  • Ability to obtain Colorado Department of Education substitute license within 6 months of hire
  • Skills pass of Special Education Training on IEP reading and implementation provided by the Special Education Supervisor
  • Demonstrated experience in the practice of de-escalating negative behaviors and creating safe environments
  • Demonstrated experience in Behavioral Health, Special Education, Early Childhood Education
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills to be used in critical and time sensitive daily documentation
  • Proficiency in computer applications
  • Positive driving motor vehicle (DMV) record, proof of current automobile insurance coverage, and a copy of a valid and current Colorado driver's license
  • Basic Life Support and First Aid within 90 days of employment

Responsibilities

  • Leads a safe, consistent, and supportive learning environment by collaborating and effectively communicating with the multidisciplinary treatment team and providing culturally sensitive care in accordance with the care/treatment plan.
  • Independently initiates and assists the Special Education Teacher with planning, instruction, and facilitation in all areas of educational programming.
  • Facilitates social emotional learning within the classroom and assists the Special Education Teacher in academic instruction.
  • Facilitates various group content including educational activities, goal setting, relaxation, skill building, and psycho educational activities as dictated by skill level.
  • Demonstrates an expert level of skill in utilizing Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) and Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) to proactively teach and manage client’s emotions and behaviors.
  • Effectively works with physically and verbally aggressive patients by using appropriate interventions.
  • Maintains calm demeanor while engaging with patients actively exhibiting negative or maladaptive behaviors, taking initiative to improve patient care.
  • Recognizes critical situations and drives collaboration between the multidisciplinary team to create new interventions and supports.
  • Implements and adjusts plans with the team as needed.
  • Responds to patient crises through effective use of crisis response interventions up to and including physical restraint which adheres to behavioral health policy standards regarding the use of physical restraint.
  • Performs and accurately documents patient care interventions, observations, and group/educational interactions in Epic through critical reports, medical reports, physical management reports, daily home logs, and tracking of treatment plan goals daily.
  • Mentors peer mental health workers on documentation and intervention.
  • Will be required to float to other classrooms or departments (within scope and qualifications) based on business need.
  • Satisfy all Intermountain Health requirements and perform other duties as assigned.
