About The Position

Requirements

• Graduate of a National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)-approved Respiratory Therapist program; education must be from an accredited institution and will be verified.
• Registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (RRT).
• Current Registered Respiratory Therapy license in the state of practice.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for healthcare providers.
• Specific certifications as required, such as PALS, ACLS, or NRP.
• Ability to see and read information and labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, and identify equipment and supplies.
• Ability to verbally communicate and to hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, especially during emergencies.
• Manual dexterity to manipulate complex and delicate equipment precisely, and ability to use computers and type for documentation, information access, and medication preparation.
• Ability to lift and move patients using a full range of movement; bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment, including heavy items.
• Ability to walk and assist with transporting or ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment.
• Ability to push and pull gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items, and navigate crowded rooms with equipment and cords.
• Ability to stand in a stationary position for an extended period.

Responsibilities

• Perform, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic testing procedures according to protocol.
• Obtain arterial gases.
• Oversee and troubleshoot equipment operation to support optimal patient care.
• Initiate Respiratory Protocol according to departmental criteria.
• Initiate interventions based on assessment interpretation.
• Administer medications safely and in a timely manner.
• Evaluate treatment effects and reassess patients according to protocol.
• Communicate patient progress and information to staff, physicians, nurses, and other departments.
• Maintain awareness of assigned patients’ overall condition and make appropriate patient-care recommendations.
• Identify patients’ and families’ educational needs related to health promotion and wellness, and teach self-care techniques and modalities.
• Complete documentation according to departmental standards and accurately document productivity information.
• Monitor supplies and equipment, reporting items that are low, on loan, or broken to the appropriate person.
• Use time effectively to meet productivity standards, including during low-census periods.
• Participate in quality and patient-safety initiatives; identify improvement opportunities and potential safety hazards, and take appropriate action.
• Participate in departmental meetings and contribute ideas or feedback.
• Promote Respiratory Care and act as a resource, consultant, and mentor to staff and patient-care areas, including supporting the development of others.
• Participate in quality-improvement and research activities as part of the Respiratory Care Team to guide development of patient-care standards.
• Float to other departments within the scope of competency and qualifications as business needs require.
• Be available for on-call placement during a regularly scheduled shift if required.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
