About The Position

Requirements

• Graduate of an A.S.R.T.-approved Registered Radiologist Assistant program.
• Current registration by the New York State Department of Education as a Registered Radiologic Assistant (R.R.A.).
• Able to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization.
• Maintain BLS/CPR and ACLS certifications.
• Maintain radiologist assistant board certification and annual CME requirements for reappointment and privileging.

Responsibilities

• Document adverse occurrences, reactions, and extravasations, and conduct patient follow-up calls within 24 hours except on Fridays.
• Obtain informed consent; verify exam preparation; assess health, medication, pregnancy, and other risk factors; and ensure the patient can communicate with a radiologist when needed.
• Obtain and evaluate vital signs, perform limited physical examinations as appropriate, record relevant data, and present significant findings concisely to the supervisor or attending physician.
• Review medical records and prior reports, interview patients to obtain or update histories, explain procedures and their risks, benefits, alternatives, and follow-up, and report significant findings to the radiologist.
• Verify appropriate tests and medications under criteria established by the supervising physician and explain the preparation and expected effects of procedures and pharmaceuticals.
• Ensure procedures are documented in the medical record and explain potential pharmaceutical side effects to patients.
• Administer prescribed contrast agents, radiopharmaceuticals, and medications, and monitor patients for side effects or complications.
• Perform specified fluoroscopic examinations and procedures, including upper GI, esophagus, small bowel, barium enema, cystogram, T-tube cholangiogram, retrograde urethrogram, feeding tube placement, port injection, fistulogram/sonogram, loopogram, and swallowing study.
• Perform specified procedures involving contrast media and needle or catheter placement, including joint injection and aspiration, conventional/CT/MR arthrogram, PICC placement, image-guided paracentesis, and image-guided thoracentesis.
• Operate fixed or mobile fluoroscopic equipment, document fluoroscopy time, evaluate images for completeness and diagnostic quality, and recommend additional images as permitted by protocol.
• Review imaging procedures, make initial observations, communicate observations only to the radiologist, and record communicated observations according to approved protocols.
• Communicate radiologist reports to referring physicians consistent with ACR communication guidelines and provide physician-prescribed post-care instructions.
• Conduct follow-up patient evaluations and communicate findings to radiologists; document procedures and protocol exceptions; and prepare discharge summaries for radiologist review and co-signature.
• Participate in quality improvement, patient-outcome monitoring, and research or clinical trials, including protocol preparation, patient screening and enrollment, data collection, and review as applicable.
• Maintain professional expertise, pursue continuing education, meet annual CME requirements for reappointment and privileging, and maintain radiologist assistant board certification.
• Serve as a clinical expert and educational resource for peers and other health professionals, and participate in conferences and lectures as assigned.
• Collaborate with nursing and other disciplines on clinical studies and use evidence-based literature to support appropriate practice changes.
• Monitor position cost-effectiveness and service efficiency and performance indicators.
• Monitor patients during radiologic exams, recognize and respond to medical emergencies and contrast reactions, and notify the radiologist and referring physician as required.
• Maintain BLS/CPR and ACLS certifications; check emergency medications monthly and replace or update them before expiration; recognize and initiate treatment for anaphylaxis; and know emergency backup procedures.
