About The Position

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Health Science, Medical Physics, Physics, or a similar discipline.
• Current California Nuclear Medicine Technologist License.
• Current CNMT certification through the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB), or R.T.(N) certification through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
• Current BLS certification.
• At least 5 years of experience as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist.
• Ability to perform the duties and assume the responsibilities and authority of the RSO during the RSO’s absence.
• Knowledge, skills, and ability to oversee radiation safety and regulatory compliance responsibilities.

Nice To Haves

• Master’s degree in Health Science, Medical Physics, Physics, or a similar discipline.
• At least 5 years of experience in health physics, radioactive materials, and state and federal regulations.
• Board certification as a Medical Physicist by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) and/or the American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine (ABSNM).
• Current CT certification through the NMTCB or ARRT.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine and advanced nuclear medicine procedures, document patient care, receive and transcribe verbal orders from licensed independent practitioners, and document imaging studies and equipment quality control in accordance with scope of practice, licensing, and institutional policies.
• Maintain competencies, communicate and explain procedures appropriately to patients, and make adjustments based on the patient population.
• Ensure possession, use, storage, and security of radioactive materials comply with license limitations, regulations, certificate conditions, manufacturer instructions, and safety practices.
• Implement, coordinate, and oversee the Radiation Protection Program and enforce radiation safety policies and procedures.
• Serve on the Radiation Safety Committee, connect the committee with radiation users, plan and guide committee agendas, and support committee chairs.
• Identify, investigate, and notify management of radiation safety issues and events; recommend and oversee corrective actions and verify implementation.
• Consult with leadership, facilities, and staff about regulations, license requirements, and obligations, and provide reports to administrative leadership.
• Review and make recommendations for construction and renovation projects involving radioactive materials or radiation-producing machines, including shielding, layout, regulatory compliance, and monitoring.
• Address personnel monitoring, ALARA investigations, pregnancy consultations, and employee radiation safety matters.
• Investigate medical events collaboratively, including through Root Cause Analysis and other investigative protocols.
• Maintain calibrations, testing, machine registrations, dosimetry, and quality controls as required; identify restricted areas and ensure radioactive material security.
• Develop, implement, communicate, and monitor the effectiveness of radiation safety policies, practices, and protocols.
• Respond as a first responder to hazardous materials incidents, spills, releases, and exposures; investigate causes, advise on radioactive material incidents, and provide radiation safety guidance to leadership.
• Maintain and audit radiation safety records, including records for radioactive material shipping, receiving, administration, and disposal.
• Assist with maintenance, renewal, and amendments of the facility’s radioactive materials license.
• Manage personnel exposure monitoring, including dosimeter badge orders, exposure-history reviews, declared pregnant radiation workers, and dosimeter reports.
• Oversee compliance with requirements for receipt, inspection, monitoring, and recording of incoming radioactive material shipments.
• Analyze and prepare personnel radiation exposure records, including dosimetry reports, urine assays, and thyroid counts; notify individuals and supervisors of exposures approaching specified levels and recommend remedial measures.
• Act as RSO during the facility RSO’s prolonged absence or other absence, assuming the responsibilities and authority of the office.
• Provide leadership and guidance to lower-graded technical and professional employees in radiation safety and compliance.
• Supervise the Nuclear Medicine Laboratory and staff and assist with nuclear medicine department duties, including direct patient care, when needed.
• Perform other duties and functions delegated by Imaging leadership.
