About The Position

The McGill University Department of Surgery, Division of Vascular Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is inviting applications for a full-time Contract Academic Staff position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Clinical) based at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). This will be a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure. The Department of Surgery is a leader in academic medicine. Our educational and research missions support excellent and innovative clinical programs across our teaching hospitals. The successful candidate will join the Division of Vascular Surgery at the McGill University Health Center (MUHC), which currently consists of 7 surgeons across 2 hospitals dedicated to providing the highest standards in Vascular Surgery patient care, research, and education. The MUHC is a major teaching hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec. The Division of Vascular Surgery is a high-volume tertiary referral centre for general and complex vascular surgery pathologies including open and endovascular reconstruction for aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection, peripheral arterial occlusive disease, carotid artery pathology, trauma, dialysis access as well as vascular reconstruction for complex oncology surgery. Approximately 900 vascular surgery cases are performed annually at the MUHC. The Division also administers the MUHC Non-Invasive Vascular Laboratory with an annual volume of approximately 12,500 non-invasive examinations per year. The Division of Vascular Surgery plays an important role in Surgical Education with its own Royal College Accredited Vascular Surgery Residency, a 1-year Advanced Endovascular Fellowship as well as its important role in providing vascular surgery education for residents in other training programs. The Division is also active in Research with a surgeon Research Director, a full-time Research Associate and two full-time research coordinators.

Requirements

  • Hold a medical degree, and must hold or be eligible for, licensure in the province of Quebec.
  • Have completed Vascular Surgery training, preferably within the last 1-3 years and be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent).
  • Have completed a minimum of 1-year Clinical Fellowship in vascular surgery after residency.
  • Possess a Ph.D. and demonstrate the potential for excellence in fundamental research within the field of vascular science.
  • Be committed to, and demonstrate excellence in, clinical care, research, teaching, and innovation.
  • Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a strong commitment to acquire the necessary language skills at the level needed to practice medicine in Quebec.
  • Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families, and health care professionals.
  • Be authorized to work in Canada.
  • Be willing to work in the province of Quebec at the campus where the position is based / located.
  • Be able to communicate in English verbally and in writing.

  • Formal evidence of excellence in clinical care, research, teaching, and innovation with prior peer-recognition, awards and/or distinctions will be considered an asset.
  • Qualified individuals with other research and fellowship training that is viewed as potentially enhancing the clinical and scholarly mission of the Division may be considered in the absence of a qualified MD, Ph.D, Vascular Surgeon applicant.

Responsibilities

  • Pursue a career as a Surgeon-Scientist with a focus on fundamental bio-research within the domain of vascular disease.
  • Possess clinical expertise in all aspects of general vascular surgery, capable of providing consultancy-level support for elective and emergency vascular surgery.
  • Participate in all academic activities of the Division of Vascular Surgery.
  • Engage in and develop an academic practice at the MUHC.
  • Participate actively in all clinical activities in the Division of Vascular Surgery, including a general vascular surgery practice and the provision of on-call vascular surgery consultancy support.
  • Dedicate 50% of time to research.
  • Assist in the development of a research program with the view to obtain peer-reviewed grant and salary support.
  • Be actively involved in relevant aspects of McGill’s academic mission (e.g., teaching, supervision of students and residents and involvement in academic and administrative committees).
  • Contribute to service activities within their units, the University, and the wider scholarly community.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
