The Paramedic role in the Emergency Department involves collecting and conveying patient health status information to the RN and physician. This includes communicating verbally and in writing to assist in the development and modification of the patient's care plan. The Paramedic will explain procedures and treatments to patients to ensure cooperation and reduce apprehension, keeping them informed of their treatment plan and status. This role performs specialized work, initiating emergent or appropriate care within the scope of practice under the supervision of the Emergency Department Registered Nurse. The Paramedic will assist in establishing and maintaining effective patient flow in the Emergency Department for both emergency and outpatient visits. Key duties include assisting patients with gowns, taking vital signs, measuring and recording input and output, and attaching oxygen, oxygen saturation, and cardiac monitors as needed. The Paramedic is responsible for initiating lifesaving measures such as opening airways, ventilation, hemorrhage control, chest compressions, fracture stabilization, and cervical spine alignment. They will also stabilize and extricate injured patients from vehicles, assist patients to and from vehicles and the department, and transport patients as directed. Additional responsibilities include wound care, setting up and assisting with procedures, performing phlebotomy, basic laboratory procedures, wound cultures, Point of Care testing, EKGs, and applying splints. The Paramedic will insert, monitor, and discontinue non-medicated IV catheters in adults and pediatric populations. They will also assist in department maintenance by reporting defective equipment, cleaning and stocking rooms, answering phones, and retrieving supplies. In some cases, the Paramedic may administer limited medications as ordered by the physician after completing specific training and exams. Other duties as assigned.
