About The Position
Performs skilled general and major repair work on City cars, trucks, vehicles, and other equipment under general supervision. Duties include mechanical and service work, repairing vehicle and equipment parts, and picking up and delivering vehicles to vendors. Pay is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Employees may receive an ASE incentive of 5% of gross pay per pay period with three certifications, 10% with six certifications, and 15% with ten certifications. This position requires on-call availability for up to 17 weeks per year. The City of Delray Beach is a non-tobacco workplace and will not consider applicants who have used tobacco or nicotine products during the three months before applying. Employees with a CDL performing DOT-regulated safety-sensitive activities may be required to undergo drug and alcohol testing. Veterans' preference applies.
Requirements
- High school graduation or an acceptable equivalency diploma.
- At least four years of mechanical experience in automotive or truck repair.
- Completion of mechanical school or an accredited technical school.
- Valid Florida Driver’s License with a good driving record.
- Possess a Class B CDL with air brake endorsement, or obtain it within six months of hire.
- Knowledge of construction, assembly, adjustment, and maintenance of a wide variety of automotive, truck, and equipment.
- Knowledge of shop tools.
- Ability to follow directions and demonstrate mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to repair diesel motors and pumps and diagnose worn or broken engine parts.
- Ability to perform tune-ups and electrical, brake, air-conditioning, cooling-system, exhaust-system, front-end, clutch, pump, and related equipment repairs or maintenance.
- Skill in applying automotive or diesel repair methods and techniques.
- A comparable combination of education, training, and experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications.
- Employees with a CDL performing DOT-regulated safety-sensitive activities are subject to drug and alcohol testing.
Nice To Haves
- ASE certification in truck or automotive repair is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Perform mechanical and service work on City vehicles, trucks, and other equipment, including front-end work, four-wheel brake jobs, tire replacement and repair, electrical repairs, tune-ups, carburetor and fuel-injection repairs, drivetrain repairs, and diesel repair or service.
- Pick up and deliver vehicles to various vendors.
- Repair parts on vehicles and equipment.
- Be available on call for up to 17 weeks per year.
- Operate and care for equipment according to manufacturer specifications and applicable parameters.
- Meet general employee expectations, including responding positively to supervision, reporting to work prepared and promptly, notifying supervisors of absences, following workplace rules, and interacting courteously and respectfully with the public and colleagues.
