About The Position
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) seeks a Land Surveyor for its Location and Survey operations in East Baton Rouge Parish. The position reviews and verifies survey data collected by field crews to ensure accuracy and compliance with project requirements. Depending on assignment, the employee may direct survey crews performing specialized field layouts for road construction and develop custom maps for departmental needs. The role also assists with managing, coordinating, and scheduling survey crews to support field operations and project priorities. This is a career progression position that may be filled at the Surveyor Intern 1 or 2, or Surveyor 3, 4, or 5 level, depending on qualifications and agency needs. The position reports to the Surveyor Supervisor. It requires a current Louisiana Land Surveyor Intern certificate; the posting also states that the position requires a valid Professional Surveyor’s license and proficiency in current versions of Bentley InRoads and MicroStation. The positions qualify for a Special Entrance Rate: Surveyor Intern 1, $2,692.80 biweekly; Surveyor Intern 2, $2,881.60 biweekly; Surveyor 3, $3,083.20 biweekly; Surveyor 4, $3,529.60 biweekly; and Surveyor 5, $3,776.80 biweekly. A 10% Base Optional Pay increase applies upon attainment of permanent status. Additional compensation may be considered for extraordinary qualifications under State Civil Service Rules and DOTD policy. Appointments may be probational, promotional, temporary (limited to four years), or by detail to special duty. The posting may be used to fill multiple vacancies.
Requirements
- Possession of a current Louisiana Land Surveyor Intern certificate.
- A valid Professional Surveyor’s license.
- Proficiency in current versions of Bentley InRoads and MicroStation.
Responsibilities
- Review, edit, and verify electronic survey data for accuracy and completeness, including performing calculations, plotting, and preparing electronic survey maps using laptop computers and specialized software such as InRoads and MicroStation.
- Calculate and verify horizontal and vertical survey control information for inclusion in the Louisiana Spatial Information Database, including GPS-derived vertical data, conventional differential leveling, and gravity study data.
- Research courthouse records, land offices, deeds, abstracts, maps, and other land ownership documents to identify inconsistencies, errors, and omissions affecting property boundaries and surveys.
- Serve as an expert witness in legal proceedings involving land boundary disputes and prepare legal descriptions of land areas depicted on completed survey maps.
- Receive and evaluate project assignments, research and conduct site reconnaissance, and determine appropriate survey methods and procedures.
- Review, approve, sign, and seal right-of-way maps prepared by subordinate personnel, certifying them as official legal documents.
- Provide direction to survey crews performing specialized field layouts for road construction projects, as assigned.
- Develop custom maps to meet departmental needs, as assigned.
- Assist with managing, coordinating, and scheduling survey crews to support field operations and project priorities.
- Perform other duties as assigned, including emergency and disaster support activities.
