About The Position

This 12-month, full-time, paid training program is designed for new Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) graduates who are serious about specializing in orthopedics and are ready to gain the necessary experience. The fellowship addresses the common challenge new graduates face in obtaining orthopedic experience due to the requirement of prior experience. Participants will be fully integrated into various aspects of orthopedic care, including clinic, hospital, and operating room settings, with responsibilities that increase as their skills develop. The program offers structured mentorship from experienced surgeons and APPs, progressive autonomy, and a clear path to a permanent role within the practice upon successful completion. The fellowship emphasizes hands-on experience with real patients and procedures, aiming to prepare graduates for independent practice within one year.

Requirements

  • Recent PA or NP graduate.
  • BC or board-eligible.
  • Licensed in Illinois or in the process of obtaining licensure.
  • Aptitude, drive, and willingness to be coached.
  • Ability to stay hungry, ask good questions, and differentiate confidence from competence.
  • Comfort with complexity, including multiple sites, rotating schedules, and call coverage.
  • Willingness to treat a diverse patient population, including Medicaid and underinsured patients.

Nice To Haves

  • No prior orthopedic experience required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform independent orthopedic evaluations and develop treatment plans.
  • Manage fractures and acute injuries.
  • Conduct post-operative visits and wound care.
  • Perform injections, splinting, casting, and other in-office procedures.
  • Review imaging and make clinical decisions.
  • Conduct daily inpatient rounding.
  • Handle ED and floor consults.
  • Manage orders, documentation, and discharge planning.
  • Serve as a liaison between surgeons and hospital teams.
  • Act as a surgical first assist in the operating room.
  • Coordinate pre- and post-operative care.
  • Gain progressive OR responsibility as skills develop.
