Requirements

  • Any combination of experience and training in voice-to-sign to voice interpreting or transliterating that demonstrates assurance of skills appropriate for the level of the assignment.
  • Equivalent to a minimum of two years of paid interpreting experience; three years or 1800 hours preferred.
  • Candidate must possess and maintain certification in CI, CT, NIC (National Interpreter Certification), and National Association of the Deaf (NAD).
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques used in communicating with deaf/hard of hearing persons.
  • Knowledge of the vocabulary used in the courses to which assigned.
  • Ability to hear spoken language communication.
  • Ability to use American Sign Language or other sign systems.
  • Ability to interpret spoken English at a rate appropriate to the assignment.
  • Ability to vocally express for deaf/hard of hearing signers.
  • Ability to interpret or transliterate for a group of hearing and deaf/hard of hearing persons.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the United States.

Nice To Haves

  • Three years of experience preferred for Interpreter I.
  • Wide acquaintance with the academic higher education system of instruction through attendance or graduation from a four-year college or university is desirable for Interpreter II A/B.

Responsibilities

  • Provides interpreting services to facilitate communication most often in a classroom or related instruction settings and activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Adapts terminology, language, instruction, concept, theory, and emotion to convey all aspects of the lecture, teaching material, and experiences.
  • Relays specialized vocabulary, ideas, or concepts successfully to the student by knowing the complex subject matter to a degree that provides for fluent, accurate, and specific translation in the language mode that the Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing consumer can understand readily.

  • The anticipated hiring range for Interpreter I is $32.28 - $41.29 per hour, dependent upon qualifications and experience.
  • The anticipated hiring range Interpreter II A/B is $48.59 - $59.17 per hour, dependent upon qualifications and experience.
  • The salary range for this classification is: $19.37 - $194.60 per hour.
