About The Position

The ASL Interpreter provides in-person American Sign Language interpreting to deaf and hard-of-hearing students in grades 3 through 12, substituting for district staff interpreters on an as-needed basis. The interpreter facilitates full access to classroom instruction, school activities, and communication between students, teachers, and staff.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated qualification as an ASL interpreter meeting applicable state requirements for educational interpreting (e.g., state-recognized certification or quality-assurance screening, as required by the state Department of Education)
  • Must pass both an FBI fingerprint-based background check and a state-level criminal background check prior to placement; clearance valid two (2) years and subject to renewal
  • No felony or other disqualifying-crime conviction or plea, per district policy
  • Reliable transportation; ability to report to assigned school buildings within the district
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; comfortable working with school-age students and staff
  • Must hold and maintain any applicable state licenses/certifications; required to self-report any lapse, revocation, or suspension within one business day

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience interpreting in a K-12 or educational setting strongly preferred; experience with the grades 3–12 age range a plus

Responsibilities

  • Provide accurate, real-time ASL interpretation during classroom instruction, assemblies, and other school activities as assigned
  • Accept assignments only when scheduled through the authorized district process; do not self-schedule or accept assignments from unauthorized parties
  • Arrive punctually and be prepared for each assignment, including familiarity with subject matter and any student-specific communication needs where provided
  • Maintain professional, age-appropriate conduct and communication with students in grades 3–12
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information consistent with FERPA and school policy
  • Coordinate with classroom teachers and school staff to support the student's access to instruction
  • Document services provided (dates, times, locations, hours) to support vendor invoicing
  • Notify the scheduling coordinator promptly of any inability to fulfill an assigned engagement
  • Accept that the district may request replacement of an interpreter for a given assignment at its discretion
