About The Position
The Associate Public Health Sanitarian I will serve as an instructor in the Health Academy, reporting directly to the Assistant Director of the unit. The role educates the public through courses including the Food Protection Course, Mobile Food Vending Course, and 4-Hour Food Safety Course, ensuring compliance with relevant laws, rules, regulations, and Health Code requirements. The instructor also reviews and proctors online courses and exams for outside approved providers and provides technical guidance to participants. The position supports food safety and public health through education and engagement. The Health Academy provides mandated environmental science training to members of the public and Environmental Health Personnel. Its courses include food protection training for food service establishments, mobile vendors, and soup kitchen operators, as well as infection control training for tattoo artists and animal handling training for pet shop operators. The Division of Environmental Health works to prevent and control illness and injury related to environmental and occupational health risks through outreach, education, surveillance, and enforcement.
Requirements
- Meet one of the stated education and experience pathways: a bachelor's degree with specified science credits and at least two years of satisfactory full-time inspection experience; an associate degree with specified science credits and four years of such experience; or equivalent education and/or experience, subject to the stated minimum credit and experience conditions.
- All candidates must have at least 60 semester credits from an accredited college, including at least 15 semester credits in the physical and/or biological sciences.
- All candidates must have at least two years of experience as a public health sanitarian performing inspections to assure compliance with relevant laws, rules, and regulations governing food, drugs, and general environmental conditions.
- Only permanent employees in the title and candidates reachable on the Associate Public Health Sanitarian civil service list are eligible to apply.
Responsibilities
- Teach the Food Protection Course for operators of Food Service Establishments, ensuring compliance with Health Code requirements and departmental regulations.
- Teach the Mobile Food Vending Course and provide vendors with technical guidance on food safety practices and regulatory compliance.
- Facilitate the 4-Hour Food Safety Course, instructing participants on environmental health and safety rules and best practices.
- Conduct in-service training programs and provide technical guidance on more difficult inspections.
- Review and proctor online courses and exams for outside approved providers.
- Direct programs to enforce Health Code regulations and environmental health and safety rules.
