Weyerhaeuser’s Montana Wood Products is currently looking to fill a Saw Filer Trainee position at our Kalispell Lumber facility. This is your opportunity for a career in skilled trades. The successful candidate will have technical capabilities to effectively work with the filing team to perform/coordinate a variety of functions to support the safety, efficiency and effectiveness of filing operations and associated activities. This position will help to service all aspects of saw maintenance for both stellite and carbide saws. The position is also responsible to assist with saw/chipper head changes, perform preventative maintenance and inspect equipment for signs of wear, damage, or unsafe conditions. The successful candidate will need to aspire to have operational excellence, be a team player and be willing to do whatever it takes to help make the sawmill and planer successful.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Candidate must be able to provide personal hand tools of the trade.
  • Interest and willingness to learn and progress in saw filing trade – knives/circle saws/band saws
  • Knowledge to use precise measuring equipment, i.e., micrometers and dial indicators, etc.
  • Willingness to work various shifts days/nights and overtime when required
  • Willingness to work weekends and holidays, as necessary
  • Willingness to commit to training that will require self-study materials
  • Ability to service all aspects of saw maintenance for both stellite and carbide saws.
  • Ability to work closely with supervisors, electricians, millwrights and others; be a team player/leader; good verbal and written communication skills; and demonstrate positive attitude.
  • Demonstrate ability to work safely and care for tools and equipment
  • Ability to be a self-starter with the ability to work with and without direct supervision.
  • Ability to anticipate production/maintenance needs
  • Ability to be flexible to change and constant interruptions using time management skills
  • Knowledge and ability to use Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). Show proficiency in Job Safety Analysis (JSA) standards.
  • Demonstrate basic computer skills including Maintenance Management Software, MS Office, Email and Web based programs. Must be able to manage program files as documented in file management SOPs. Must be able to search Knowledgebase and follow written procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, write and follow specific printed directions
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to internal filing shop quality control and troubleshoot lumber for quality and size control
  • Complete required paperwork utilizing preventative maintenance software program associated with repairing saws/equipment, documenting parts usage, and accounting for repair times.
  • Possess mechanical background and aptitude
  • Demonstrate knowledge in mill safety processes and have strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrate knowledge regarding preventative maintenance processes, process reliability and how to maintain shop standards.
  • Demonstrate knowledge inspecting and maintaining precision equipment for proper calibration.

Nice To Haves

  • Metal working skills and machine shop skills preferred
  • Previous saw filing experience is strongly preferred
  • Related vocational courses preferred

Responsibilities

  • Support Kalispell Lumber by maximizing equipment reliability and operational excellence by working with a team of filers, millwrights, electricians, and operators.
  • Support Kalispell Lumber with setup and maintenance of the planer; setting up heads and helping the planer feeder as needed to attain maximum throughput.
  • Obtain working knowledge of satellite, carbide, basic benching procedures, internal quality control and alignment procedures.
  • Obtain expertise in all aspects of saw maintenance, including carbide, basic benching procedures, internal quality control, grinding/benching round and band saws, saw changes, preventative maintenance, and machine center alignment procedures.
  • Implement process changes in a rapid-changing work environment to ensure maximum quality lumber production.
  • Complete required paperwork utilizing preventative maintenance software program associated with repairing saws/equipment, documenting parts usage, and accounting for repair times.
  • Demonstrate leadership in mill safety processes and strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Assist with saw/chipper head changes.
  • Perform preventative maintenance.
  • Inspect equipment for signs of wear, damage, or unsafe conditions.
