About The Position

The Dean of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) is a key academic leadership position at the community college, reporting to an Executive Dean of General Education and Transfer Studies. This role oversees Science, Technology, Engineering & Math, as well as campus operations and community engagement within their assigned area of responsibility. The Dean provides strategic direction, ensures program quality, and effectively fosters student success while managing budgets, personnel, and resources. Requirements

  • Master's Degree from an accredited institution in a relevant field.
  • Five years of academic leadership experience
  • Four years of related experience in higher education, which may include: College level teaching experience, Program administration, Curriculum development, Oversight of student service programs
  • Sound understanding of the community college learning environment and a commitment to the comprehensive community college mission
  • Demonstrated value for culturally diverse faculty, students and staff, and, an ability to foster a work environment conducive to cultural and linguistic diversity and mutual development
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Experience in successfully planning, developing, directing, and evaluating higher education programs and demonstrated ability to effectively delegate responsibility
  • Ability to effectively delegate responsibility and empower staff
  • Commitment to student success; ability to connect with students; sensitivity to the needs of current and emerging community college student populations
  • Strong leadership skills, including the ability to build and lead effective teams
  • Proficiency in budget management and resource allocation
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative partnership within the college and with external stakeholders
  • Commitment to professional development and continuous learning for self and others
  • Demonstrate ability to use data and apply an equity lens to address gaps in educational outcomes
  • Bicultural/multicultural skills sufficient to select appropriate behaviors, values and attitudes within different cultures during interactions with others

Nice To Haves

  • Doctoral degree from an accredited institution
  • Five years of full-time equivalent experience in program administration and direct supervision of staff
  • Experience in a community college setting
  • Experience as an instructor in one or more of the academic disciplines in the department
  • Experience in providing leadership for a program or department

Responsibilities

  • Provides strong leadership through a participatory management and team building
  • Recruits, hires, supervises, creates work assignments and evaluates faculty and staff, as well as recommending the retention, promotion, or dismissal of staff
  • Fosters innovation and creates opportunities for change that align with Chemeketa's mission and is guided by Chemeketa's values
  • Implements Strategic goals to enhance department and college success
  • Administers policies and procedures, upholding professional standards
  • Oversees program curriculum development, planning and assessment
  • Demonstrates leadership for effective teaching and learning methods and practices within the department; is visible to students, staff and faculty; promotes student recruitment and success
  • Plans, supervises, and manages the delivery of instructional and support services; analyzes students, staff, and the global community needs and resources to determine, recommend, and/or develop courses and programs
  • Provides leadership for solving student/instructor disputes
  • Collaborates with program chairs/coordinators to ensure smooth operations
  • Creates collaborative relationships, develops courses and programs, and writes contracts with, and for, business, industry, education, public agencies, and non-profit organizations
  • Represents Chemeketa in decision making at state and national levels
  • Facilitates effective communication and collaborative partnerships with other college departments, business, industry, school districts, colleges/universities and agencies; works with community partners to oversee related space, such as labs, practicum, or field sites to optimize usage
  • Functions effectively as a team member at department, division, and college-wide levels
  • Participates in college-wide committees and activities
  • Builds and maintains relationship with community partners
  • Serves as an advocate for faculty, staff and department programs
  • Develops, monitors and manages departmental operational budgets for the department
  • Actively participates in and implements fundraising, grants, and contract development
  • Approves and monitors expenditures
  • Identifies new revenue source and opportunities
  • Identifies and pursues suitable grant opportunities
  • Oversees the application and implementation process
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Embraces diversity and actively collaborates effectively with a variety of students, staff and the public from diverse cultural, social, economic and educational backgrounds
  • Participates in recruitment and retention of students at an individual and institutional level in promotion of student success
  • Embraces, understands and uses appropriate technology tools to accomplish job functions
  • Provides high quality, effective service to internal and external customers through continuous improvement and adoption of lean office practices
