About The Position

Requirements

• High school graduation or equivalent and one year of chemical, clinical, or public health laboratory experience; alternatively, completion of a laboratory assistant course approved by the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
• Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except where legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration, apply.

Responsibilities

• Sort and prioritize initial specimens and requests, and receive specimens.
• Match specimens against requisitions to confirm appropriate tube type.
• Prepare reagents, chemical solutions, culture media, or cell cultures according to established procedures.
• Operate laboratory equipment, including electronic balances, microscopes, spectrophotometers, pH meters, autoclaves, metering pumps, and centrifuges.
• Centrifuge and aliquot the appropriate specimen type and quantity as ordered.
• Assist in orienting, training, and supporting new employees.
• Refer testing to other laboratories when procedurally necessary.
• Maintain complete, accurate, and legible records.
• Clean the work area at least once each shift.
• Answer telephones, intercom, and window reception courteously and professionally.
• Perform computer functions needed to complete tasks, including patient and test data entry, printing, worksheets, reports, and result inquiries.
• Respond to inquiries about patient lab values, reference ranges, specimen requirements, procedures, test turnaround times, and preparation of specimens for outside laboratories.
• Resolve specimen- or order-related problems.
• Attend division and departmental staff meetings.
• Promote and contribute to teamwork and effective working relationships between the laboratory and other departments.
• Complete compliance, safety, and other training relevant to assigned job functions.
• Perform the work of a Clinical Laboratory Assistant and other related duties as required.
