About The Position

UChicago Medicine is hiring a Pre Analytical Technician in the Clinical Chemistry Laboratory. This role provides specimen receipt, assessment, and pre-analytical processing, along with quality assurance activities such as verifying missing information, handling exceptions, and initiating specimen rejection in accordance with laboratory policies. The technician follows laboratory procedures and applicable regulatory requirements to support accurate, high-quality results for physicians and patients. Phlebotomy specimen collection and assistance with bone marrow procedures may also be required.

This is a 100% onsite position at the Hyde Park campus for someone based in the greater Chicagoland area. The anticipated schedule is approximately 40 hours per week, Tuesday through Saturday, on the night shift from approximately 11:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. On-call shifts are not scheduled.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Knowledge of and ability to use laboratory and hospital information systems.
• Knowledge of and ability to use automated and conventional laboratory equipment.
• Ability to interact professionally with individuals at all levels.

Nice To Haves

• Associate degree in a science-related field.
• Clinical laboratory or phlebotomy experience.

Responsibilities

• Receive specimens submitted to the laboratory.
• Accession, label, and order specimens according to laboratory procedures to ensure accurate identification, identify the ordering provider, and support proper billing.
• Determine whether submitted specimens are acceptable for analysis by applying requisition and specimen requirements.
• Ensure appropriate storage and handling of specimens that cannot be analyzed immediately.
• Maintain specimen integrity through appropriate transport, shipping, and packaging procedures, including for specimens sent out for testing.
• Prepare specimens for analysis through centrifugation, aliquotting blood and body fluids, packaging, setup, quality assessment, and distribution to appropriate laboratory sections.
• Handle dry ice, formalin, and other hazardous materials when needed for specimen processing and transport.
• Perform phlebotomy for specimen collection and assist with bone marrow collection when needed.
• Perform assigned waived testing.
• Use laboratory equipment safely and proficiently, following maintenance, safety, and quality-control procedures.
• Collaborate with technicians and leadership to report test results correctly in the laboratory information system, meet turnaround times, and follow procedures during downtimes.
• Provide patient-focused care by accurately performing waived tests through pre-analytic and analytic stages.
• Answer inquiries about specimen handling, results, and other technical information; assist clinicians and find appropriate resources when needed.
• Perform clerical duties such as shipping, filing, laminating, scanning, and mailing.
• Maintain a professional demeanor when interacting with patients during specimen collection.
• Initiate and document troubleshooting and problem-solving to resolve issues.
• Communicate pertinent information and problems respectfully and proactively to the laboratory team and leadership.
• Prepare and maintain adequate stocks of reagents, standards, and control materials, and notify leadership about shortages or problems.
• Help maintain compliance with policies, procedures, and records required by accrediting and regulatory agencies.
• Assist with training and continuing education for laboratory testing personnel, students, pathology residents, fellows, and others.
• Assist with validation and implementation of new tests, procedures, and equipment.
• Participate in educational and training activities to acquire new skills, maintain technical relevance, and improve proficiency.
