About The Position

The Certified Phlebotomy Technician I performs skin punctures and venipunctures on patients of all ages to obtain blood specimens for clinical laboratory analysis, under the supervision of the Laboratory Director, Manager, or Supervisor. The role also includes laboratory specimen processing and clerical support. Additional tasks may be assigned by the department manager or director.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Completion of a formal phlebotomy training program or equivalent on-the-job training with documented competency.
• Active California Certified Phlebotomy Technician I license.
• BLS certification within 45 days of hire and maintained current according to hospital requirements.

• Minimum of one year of clinical laboratory experience.

Responsibilities

• Perform skin punctures and venipunctures on patients of all ages to obtain blood specimens for analysis.
• Enter data into computer systems, file documents, communicate by telephone, and perform other clerical duties.
• Use knowledge of laboratory test terminology and demonstrate clear communication and polite telephone etiquette when assisting patients and visitors.
• Use proper phlebotomy techniques and equipment to collect specimens from newborns through geriatric patients.
• Process microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank specimens.
• Process specimens for referral to reference laboratories.
• Stock routine supplies and maintain cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, and work areas.
• Process or load specimens onto automated laboratory instrumentation according to established policies and procedures.
• Assist with picking up samples at the hospital or operating room, sorting and putting away samples, assisting pathology, inventorying and replenishing supplies, ordering supplies, handling mail pickup and delivery, faxing, answering phones, and receiving product deliveries.
