About The Position

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED and surgical technology education through a general or accredited program; the job definition also specifies a certificate or associate degree from a community college or technical school.
• National surgical technology certification and a passed competency examination through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or National Center for Competency Testing.
• Current BLS certification, or an accepted American Red Cross BLS or BLS instructor credential, upon hire.
• One of the listed surgical credentials upon hire: CST, TS-C (NCCT), CSFA, or CSA.
• Ability to read, write, and speak English.
• Strong customer-service, interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to collaborate with healthcare providers and delegate to team members as needed.
• Ability to multitask and function in stressful or emergency situations.
• Strong attention to detail and knowledge of surgical procedures.
• Basic computer skills, including Word and Excel.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, self-direct, apply independent judgment, think critically, and adapt quickly to changing situations.

Responsibilities

• Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and other healthcare team members during moderate- to high-difficulty surgical cases.
• Check procedure supplies and equipment, review preference cards, assist with room setup, and arrange sterile supplies, instruments, equipment, and medications or solutions.
• Perform surgical counts with the circulator and participate in procedure time-outs and post-procedure pauses, including proper specimen handling.
• Scrub, gown, and glove; gown and glove the surgeon and assistants; and assist with draping the sterile field.
• Pass instruments, maintain an organized back table and operative field, and maintain sterile technique throughout procedures.
• Prepare sterile dressings and clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization; notify sterile processing of critical instrument needs.
• Apply aseptic principles to help prevent infection and protect patients and employees.
• Prepare case carts, review the surgical schedule, and assist the clinical coordinator with preparation for future cases.
• Observe patients and promptly report changes or significant findings to the physician and registered nurse.
• Plan proactively for procedure progression and adjust appropriately during emergencies.
• Prepare and turn over operating rooms and other assigned areas, including stocking, cleaning, requesting supplies, preparing instruments, and notifying specialty staff about equipment needs.
• Use supplies and equipment responsibly, opening only required supplies until requested by the surgeon.
• Provide patient-centered care under registered nurse supervision, including verifying procedures, conducting relief bedside shift reports, and supporting patient advocacy and safety.
• Follow current clinical practice standards, organizational policies, legal and accreditation requirements, and patient safety goals.
• Collaborate with the healthcare team, promote a positive work environment, and assist with between-case and terminal room cleaning, room preparation, patient transport, and age-specific comfort and safety measures.
• Participate in performance-improvement initiatives and seek opportunities to improve processes.
• Complete initial and annual competencies, mandatory and population-specific education, and required computer-based learning; maintain 20 hours of field-related continuing education per evaluation period.
• Support students and new hires, participate in training on new policies, processes, or equipment, and serve as a resource for new technology or procedures.
• Care for surgical equipment and accessories; keep the surgical area organized and clean; maintain medical supplies; and complete other assigned duties and Success Factor requirements.
• Comply with Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
