About The Position

The Substance Abuse Specialist provides substance abuse care under the supervision of a Team Leader, Program Director/Coordinator, or Clinical Director. The role includes educating beneficiaries about substance abuse and promoting harm reduction and abstinence to support recovery. The position may involve overseeing staff and requires participation in all training and education mandated by the service line and clinical coverage policy.

Requirements

  • Minimum high school diploma.
  • Strong clinical skills.
  • Knowledge of the population served.
  • One of the following credentials: CCS, CSI, LCAS, LCAS-A, or CADC.
  • Maintain a current license or certification, if applicable.
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license and personal vehicle insurance coverage.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive substance abuse assessments, considering the relationship between substance use and mental health.
  • Assess and track beneficiaries’ stages of change readiness and stages of treatment.
  • Use outreach and motivational interviewing techniques with beneficiaries in earlier stages of change readiness.
  • Facilitate access to 12-step groups and other community supports.
  • Use cognitive behavioral approaches and relapse prevention with beneficiaries in later stages of change readiness.
  • Ensure fellow service providers’ treatment approaches are consistent with beneficiaries’ stages of change readiness.
  • Facilitate Person-Centered Planning for assigned beneficiaries.
  • Facilitate group sessions.
  • Take a lead role in placement in short- or long-term treatment and detox services as needed.
  • Participate in a 24/7/365 first responder on-call system for consumers and/or their natural support networks, coordinating first-response resources according to consumer needs and the PCP.
  • Represent the company positively and in a manner reflective of its mission.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive and protected information, and safeguard the privacy and protected health information of people supported.
  • Assist the Team Lead with service, agency, LME/MCO, state, and federal documentation requirements and timelines, including NCTOPPs, PCPs/ITRs, and reminders for Clinical Monthly Summaries, Discharge Summaries, and Aggregate Reports.
  • Complete intake packets for referrals received by the office.
  • Document billable encounters accurately in the company’s EMR within 24 hours and enter corrections within 24 hours of notification.
  • Participate in required training and education mandated by the service line and clinical coverage policy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
