About The Position

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED
• Seven (7) years construction trades in at least three (3) disciplines (i.e., building, electrical, plumbing or mechanical)
• Requires state certification as a Building Code Administrator and Plans Examiner or the ability to obtain provisional within One hundred & twenty (120) days of employment.
• Must obtain Building Code Administrators certification within 18 months employment.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license without any restrictions.
• Thorough knowledge of the Florida Building Code and the various codes referenced, including the various statutes and administrative rules relating to building construction.
• Considerable knowledge of civil and structural engineering practices.
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and to recognize deviations from such plans in building construction and installation processes.
• Ability to supervise and coordinate the work of plan review and inspection staff engaged in the enforcement of codes and ordinances.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Ability to communicate effectively, clearly, and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Responsibilities

• Exercises the powers of the Building Official during the absence of the Building Official as specified by the Building Official.
• Reviews permit applications, construction documents, plans and specifications to ensure compliance with applicable codes.
• Confers with contractors, architects, engineers, owners, and others regarding compliance and interpretation of building, fire, accessibility and other codes/ordinances being enforced by the City.
• Confers with the Building Official on questions of technical interpretation of codes.
• Inspects work for compliance with appropriate codes and construction specifications.
• Reviews and processes permit applications, plans and other documents for building construction and alterations for issuance of building permits.
• Prepares and maintains technical records and reports.
• Provides advice and assistance to other departmental personnel on technical and administrative problems related to code compliance and interpretation.
• Coordinates the work of plans examiners and inspectors.
• Provides assistance to the general public on requirements for making applications for construction or alterations.
• Prepares reports to Building Official on any matters in dispute and number of plans received.
• Performs related duties as directed when such duties are a logical and appropriate assignment to the position.
