About The Position

Howell Township is seeking a qualified and experienced Building Sub-Code Official. Under the direction of the Construction Official, the position conducts inspections and enforces applicable regulations governing the construction, alteration, renovation, and repair of buildings and structures in accordance with the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code. The role includes reviewing applications, construction plans, and specifications to determine compliance for permit issuance; evaluating requests for variations; and inspecting properties and construction projects to verify compliance with approved plans, specifications, materials, workmanship, and required safety standards. The position is aligned with the TWU bargaining unit and offers a starting annual salary range of $76,750–$103,005 at grade 28, along with a comprehensive health benefits package and other applicable benefits. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m., with a one-hour lunch break. Applicants must submit an online Township application, resume, and applicable HHS license.

Requirements

Valid New Jersey Building Sub-Code Official License and Building Technical License at the HHS level, in accordance with N.J.A.C. 5:23-5.7 and N.J.A.C. 5:23-5.8.
Valid New Jersey driver's license.
Considerable knowledge of building construction plans, specifications, construction materials, equipment, and applicable building codes.
Knowledge of procedures and standards for inspecting construction projects and determining compliance with approved plans.
Strong organizational, supervisory, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

Conduct inspections and enforce applicable regulations governing the construction, alteration, renovation, and repair of buildings and structures in accordance with the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code.
Review applications, construction plans, and specifications to determine compliance with applicable codes and requirements for permit issuance.
Evaluate requests for variations.
Inspect properties and construction projects to ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications, materials, workmanship, and required safety standards.
