About The Position

Requirements

• Must have breastfed at least one baby; current breastfeeding is not required.
• Must be fluent in English and Spanish, including reading, writing, and speaking both languages without using a translation app or program.
• Must be enthusiastic about breastfeeding and want to help other mothers have a positive experience.
• Must pass a required fingerprint-based background check and enroll in the continuous RAP Back (Record of Arrest and Prosecution Back) program in accordance with current County Human Resources policy requirements.
• Knowledge of breastfeeding, basic computer skills, and the Women, Infants and Children Program.
• Ability to document, make telephone calls, support breastfeeding mothers, and communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of social, ethnic, economic, educational, and professional backgrounds.
• Ability to work effectively in team settings and manage personal time, priorities, and resources to achieve goals.

Responsibilities

• Receive a caseload of WIC clients and make routine periodic contacts with assigned clients.
• Provide information, breastfeeding education, and support to women managing common maternal and infant breastfeeding concerns.
• Provide in-clinic evaluation as needed.
• Refer mothers according to clinic-established protocols to the WIC Designated Breastfeeding Expert or Nutritionist, the mother’s health care provider, and other community resources as needed.
• Teach and facilitate breastfeeding support groups and/or classes.
• Issue hand and electric breast pumps to qualified mothers and document their issuance.
• Assist in establishing a breastfeeding-friendly clinic and help with special projects, such as breastfeeding promotion month and bulletin boards.
• Attend required trainings and/or meetings to increase knowledge and skills related to breastfeeding and the WIC program.
• Mentor new Breastfeeding Peer Counselors.
