This position ensures that animals used in UNMC’s biomedical research, teaching, and testing programs meet applicable federal, state, and university regulations and international accreditation guidelines. Under the direction of the Assistant Director for Animal Welfare, the role also manages the Research Technical Services (RTS) program in Comparative Medicine (CM). The position ensures animals receive a high level of care in accordance with research protocols, including preventative medicine, surgical support, and training for research personnel and staff. RTS oversight includes providing approved technical services to UNMC researchers, such as surgical and anesthetic services, imaging, clinical technical services, genetic testing, and breeding colony management. The role ensures procedures are approved and comply with UNMC policies, manages and implements medical and clinical records, and consults with, trains, and educates personnel in animal research procedures. Work outside normal Comparative Medicine hours may be required. The position participates in rotating on-call coverage, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
