Senior Embedded Software Developer

ebm-papst Inc.Farmington, CT
$130,000 - $160,000

About The Position

Responsible for application-level embedded software development, feature implementation and controller porting for ebm-papst products in the Americas region. The role applies defined corporate software architecture, modules and standards to regional product needs, but does not own corporate software architecture or pre-development. A core focus is adapting and porting existing software to local microcontroller platforms while ensuring reliable integration with electronics, motor control, diagnostics, service and production test requirements.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, embedded systems, software engineering or a comparable technical field; bachelor’s degree with extensive relevant experience may be considered.
  • Minimum seven years of professional experience in embedded software development for industrial products, motor drives, power electronics, HVAC, fan systems, automation or comparable embedded platforms.
  • Mandatory hands-on experience in embedded C/C++ on microcontroller-based platforms, including low-level drivers, real-time behavior, debugging and hardware-near integration.
  • Proven experience in software porting or controller migration projects, including adaptation to new MCU families, compiler/toolchain changes, peripheral configuration, bootload concepts and memory constraints.
  • Strong practical understanding of embedded application software, BSP usage, modular firmware integration, interface definitions and maintainability across product variants.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving skills, ownership mindset and ability to work effectively with global corporate teams and regional Americas stakeholders.
  • Fluent English communication skills are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with communication protocols and field interfaces such as MODBUS, RS485, Ethernet-based communication, MQTT, REST APIs, BACnet or comparable industrial communication technologies is preferred.
  • Experience with Git, CI/CD, CMake, Docker/Linux environments, static analysis, automated testing and structured code review practices is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Zephyr, RTOS concepts, secure boot, firmware update mechanisms, EEPROM/flash emulation, diagnostics, data logging, service concepts, Class B routines or motor protection software is desirable.
  • German language skills are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, adapt and maintain embedded application software and product-specific functions for ebm-papst electronics and e-drive platforms in the Americas region.
  • Apply defined software architecture, reusable modules, Board Support Packages and interface standards provided by the corporate development organization to regional product projects.
  • Port existing firmware and application functions to new or locally selected microcontrollers, including peripheral mapping, driver adaptation, memory layout, bootloader integration, timing behavior and validation.
  • Implement hardware-near software functions using interfaces such as UART, SPI, I2C, QSPI/OSPI, RS485, GPIO, analog/digital I/O, external memory and controller-specific peripherals.
  • Write and integrate product functions related to customer interfaces, diagnostics, parameter handling, service data, bootload/update behavior and production or end-of-line test support.
  • Support integration of communication interfaces and protocols such as MODBUS RTU/TCP, system-bus communication, Ethernet-based options, MQTT, REST APIs or comparable industrial interfaces where required by the product.
  • Use modern embedded development workflows, including Git, CMake, Linux/Docker-based environments, VS Code or comparable tools, debugging, code reviews and CI/CD practices where applicable.
  • Verify software behavior on target hardware through debugging, integration testing, regression testing and structured documentation in alignment with ebm-papst development processes.
  • Collaborate closely with corporate software architecture teams, electronics hardware, motor control, application engineering, production, quality and product stakeholders to ensure successful regional implementation.
  • Provide senior-level technical guidance for local software implementation, defect resolution, controller migration risks and practical trade-offs between product requirements, hardware constraints and software effort.
