Instructional Assistant - Adult School

About The Position

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, this role assists in the assessment of students for placement and in the instructional activities of Adult School students enrolled in Adult School Programs. The position also performs routine clerical work and other related duties as assigned. Incumbents work with adult students enrolled in various programs located at the Adult School.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school
  • A minimum of six months' experience working in an educational setting
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
  • Interpersonal relations skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Basic record keeping techniques.
  • Ability to learn instructional techniques
  • Understand the needs of adult students.
  • Perform routine clerical duties such as filing, duplicating and maintaining records.
  • Print and write legibly.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Read and follow rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
  • Work confidentially with discretion.
  • Operate a keyboard with accuracy.
  • Operate instructional and office equipment.
  • Demonstrate attendance sufficient to complete the duties of the position as required.
  • Demonstrate intact short-term and long-term memory.
  • Demonstrate empathy, friendliness, patience and responsibility.
  • Be motivated to produce high quality work product.
  • Comprehend and follow directions.
  • Maintain a work pace appropriate to the position.

Nice To Haves

  • One year's experience working in an educational setting is preferred.
  • Some positions in this class may be required to utilize a second designated language.

Responsibilities

  • Enroll students in various educational programs offered at the Adult School.
  • Monitor status and progress of students in special mandated programs such as educational programs aimed at improvement of the students' academic achievement levels.
  • Administer and grade students' completed tests; post scores on students' grade cards; file graded work, grade cards, attendance records and test answer keys.
  • Check out textbooks, videos, audiotapes, headphones and other instructional equipment to students.
  • Greet the public and new students to the site; answer questions from students on assigned Adult School program entry requirements, GED test preparation requirements and procedures, registration, and enrollment procedures.
  • Refer students to the teacher for tutoring as appropriate.
  • Take and report attendance according to state and federal adult attendance reporting requirements and produce ad hoc attendance reports.
  • Set up and maintain student records and files.
  • Perform a variety of clerical and record keeping duties such as typing, data entry and operating duplicating equipment, specific to assignment.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
