About The Position

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED
• Knowledge of venipunture and skin puncture procedures.
• Ability to professionally and courteously interact with patients, visitors, co-workers and external laboratory customers.
• Knowledge of basic computer data entry.
• Ability to prioritize tasks and organize workload.
• Knowledge of laboratory techniques in specimen handling and processing.
• Must be able to handle stressful situations in a professional manner.
• Must be detail oriented.
• Minimum two (2) years clinical or hospital experience

Nice To Haves

• Certification from a medical assistant program.
• Certification from a military medical or laboratory assistant program.
• Phlebotomy experience in a hospital inpatient setting with all age groups, specimens processing, experience using a laboratory information system for accessioning and specimen tracking.

Responsibilities

• Performs venipuncture, heel puncture and finger puncture according to established procedures.
• Instructs patients correctly for collection of non blood specimens (urines, 24 hour urines, occult blood etc).
• Accessions specimens into the computer system.
• Processes specimens in the centrifugation area for distribution to the testing area or for proper storage.
• Maintains standard precautions at all times.
• Transports specimens to the laboratory as needed.
• Provides excellent customer service.
• May be required to work from various locations (Pavilion, North Campus, or Emerson) or float between various lab departments, as needed based on department needs and within scope of practice.
