About The Position

This is a full-time CVICU Nursing Assistant position on the night shift at Navicent Health Medical Center. The role involves providing direct patient care according to unit standards, assisting with patient needs, maintaining a safe environment, and utilizing effective communication skills. The Nursing Assistant will also participate in maintaining supplies and equipment, contributing to quality scores, and demonstrating self-growth and accountability. Competencies in complex care activities, including preceptor training, glucose monitoring, respiratory care, and dressing changes, are required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Ability to communicate with patients, staff, and coworkers.
  • Spends much of the day walking and standing on tile or carpet, bending, stooping, and sitting.
  • Must be able to use visual near and distance acuity.
  • Must have verbal ability to communicate in person and over the phone or radio.
  • Must be able to assist co-workers in transfers and transport supplies, patients/residents, or equipment using good body mechanics.
  • Must have functional range of motion of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spines, upper and lower extremities with a grip strength of 60-80 pounds.
  • Must be able to forward reach, overhead reach, bend, squat, kneel and change from one position to the other rapidly.
  • Must be able to lift 25-60 lbs. and carry 25-50 pounds.
  • Must be able to tolerate high noise, busy atmospheres and noxious odors.

Nice To Haves

  • BLS, CPI
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred.
  • One year of experience taking care of patients and dealing with the public preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides physical care of the patient according to AHF/unit patient care standards, including personal care, pre- and post-op/procedure care, post-mortem care, and care for patients in restraints.
  • Assists with patient ambulation, exercise, and transfers.
  • Performs and documents intake/output, vital signs, weights, and other monitoring, including computerized charting.
  • Promptly notifies the nurse of abnormal vital signs or observations.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for the patient, including appropriate handling of body fluids and cleaning of equipment.
  • Utilizes proper body mechanics and appropriate lift techniques/resources.
  • Performs glucose monitoring via fingerstick.
  • Assists with timely admission, discharge, or transfer of patients.
  • Provides explanations of the physical environment and communication devices to patients.
  • Accurately records relevant information on the appropriate documentation tool.
  • Collects and properly forwards patient's personal belongings, documenting disposition.
  • Assures unused equipment and supplies are cleaned/removed from the patient's room after discontinuation.
  • Utilizes discharge process, including bed tracking, when discharging/transferring patients.
  • Communicates patient/family issues in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Establishes therapeutic relationships with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Maintains confidentiality in accordance with hospital policies.
  • Demonstrates effective conflict resolution skills and awareness of satisfaction issues.
  • Manages time and prioritizes tasks effectively.
  • Works effectively as part of a team.
  • Demonstrates problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Organizes work and environment efficiently.
  • Responds to patient/nurse needs and requests in a timely manner.
  • Maintains a neat and orderly appearance of patient areas.
  • Restocks supplies at the bedside, supply shelves, and other designated areas.
  • Reports broken, malfunctioning, or missing equipment to the appropriate person.
  • Ensures appropriate charges are made.
  • Properly handles, stores, cleans, and maintains equipment.
  • Efficiently and appropriately uses supplies, linen, and dietary items.
  • Participates in quality assurance and PI activities.
  • Participates in unit meetings and reads minutes of meetings not attended.
  • Maintains awareness of hospital/division/unit procedure/policy changes.
  • Verbalizes how their job supports organizational/departmental goals.
  • Demonstrates Cultural Commitments.
  • Assures competency is maintained.
  • Complies with unit-specific articulated job expectations.
  • Demonstrates competency in all required complex care activities within their home units, including but not limited to: completion of Preceptor training and serving in Preceptor role, glucose monitoring and quality control checks, respiratory care (tracheostomy care, suctioning), complete required CPR training, dressing changes, monitoring chest and other drainage tubes, procedure/equipment set-up, and assembling/administering/monitoring tube feedings.
  • Assists in achieving unit quality scores that meet or exceed hospital/national averages for nurse-sensitive quality indicators.
