About The Position

The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) will practice within the Health Services department, focusing on assessing, diagnosing, and treating students with behavioral health disorders and other health conditions. This role involves prescribing and administering medication, managing psychotropic medications, collaborating with other health professionals, and providing support for the mental well-being of the college community. The position requires maintaining clinical records, staying updated on evidence-based practices, and participating in clinical staff meetings. Administrative duties include accurate and timely documentation and meeting deadlines for licensures and certifications. The PMHNP will report to the Director of Health Services and will not supervise staff.

Requirements

  • Certification by ANCC or AANP as a PMHNP.
  • Master’s or Doctorate degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university with preparation for the advanced practice role.
  • Active unrestricted State of Minnesota RN and APRN Licenses.
  • Current CPR/BLS certification or ability to attain certification at the time of hire.
  • 1+ years of experience as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards governing care delivery and operations.
  • Proficient in the use of computers; experience with Electronic Health Records is preferred.
  • Enthusiasm for working with college students between the ages of 18-24.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to maintain collegial and therapeutic relationships.
  • Strong communication skills, including accurate and concise writing.
  • Able to work independently without direct supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Assess, diagnose, and treat students with behavioral health disorders within the clinic setting.
  • Assess, diagnose, and treat students with other health conditions within the clinic setting, according to parameters of certification and licensure (if dual certified).
  • Independently prescribe and/or administer appropriate medication, corrective measures, and medical therapeutics within scope of practice.
  • Management of psychotropic medications as needed while promoting mental well-being for students.
  • Collaborate with Health Services and Counseling Center for treatment planning.
  • Provide informal advising and support for the mental wellbeing of the college community.
  • Make appropriate referrals to other health professionals and community agencies.
  • Support, respect, and commit to embracing diverse backgrounds, values, and points of view to build a strong and inclusive community.
  • Consult with specialists and interdisciplinary clinicians as needed, providing referrals to consulting specialists and conducting follow-ups as necessary.
  • Maintain proper clinical records and reports and provide appropriate security and access to records within the guidelines of professional practice and governmental regulation.
  • Remain up to date on evidence-based practice of adolescent and young adult mental health care.
  • Attend and participate in clinical staff meetings and consultations.
  • Complete accurate and timely documentation of observations, interventions, plan of care, referrals and follow-up.
  • Complete and meet deadlines for required licensures, certifications, training and performance management cycle.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
