About The Position
The Medical Lab Assistant works in the Microbiology/Virology Lab at UF Health Shands Hospital. The role performs skin punctures to obtain blood specimens for laboratory testing and handles test requisitions and outpatient test processing. The assistant communicates with technicians about STAT, timed, and urgent testing, and contacts patients, physicians, and nursing units when required. The position also maintains organized collection trays, collection areas, and work areas. Employees are expected to demonstrate logical and professional behavior under demanding and stressful conditions.
Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Computer operational skills using a personal computer, laboratory system, or other hospital information system.
Nice To Haves
- Health-related or science background with lab-specific experience.
- National Phlebotomy Certification preferred.
Responsibilities
- Perform skin punctures to obtain blood specimens for laboratory testing.
- Promptly and accurately process test requisitions.
- Accurately charge, register, and order tests for outpatients.
- Inform technicians of STAT, timed, and other urgent testing.
- Telephone patients, physicians, and nursing units when required.
- Maintain neat and organized collection trays, collection areas, and work areas.
- Demonstrate logical, professional behavior under demanding and stressful conditions.
