About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Retail Facilities Maintenance Manager, the Retail Maintenance Technician is the operational foundation of IES's in-house maintenance capability. This role is responsible for performing general maintenance, repair tasks, and preventative maintenance across IES Retail Company Owned Company Operated (COCO) and Company Owned Retailer Operated (CORO) stations. The Maintenance Technician ensures stations maintain high image standards and optimal working conditions by executing day-to-day maintenance needs, routine upkeep to prevent issues before they arise, and leveraging modern maintenance systems (Service Channel, Owl Services ticketing, and predictive maintenance tools). This individual will follow all operating standards, work performance, compliance with environmental regulations, and company policies, live the Island Way—with an unwavering commitment to safety and environmental protection. This role bridges station staff (who report issues and provide basic troubleshooting) and specialized contractors (who handle complex repairs). The ideal candidate is a motivated self-starter who can work independently within a fast-paced environment, establish priorities under tight deadlines, and maintain sound OSHA and HIOSH safety knowledge. Prior relevant experience in the energy, retail or similar industries are preferred.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in general maintenance, handyman services, or facilities management.
  • Knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, HVAC, and other maintenance skills.
  • Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot maintenance-related problems efficiently.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to completing tasks with quality workmanship.
  • Basic understanding of OSHA and HIOSH safety regulations and practices in a maintenance setting.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills for reporting issues and working with station staff.
  • Valid driver's license with clean record.
  • Ability to uphold to strict ethical standards: integrity, objectivity, and confidentiality.
  • Proficient knowledge of OSHA, HIOSH, and compliance-related standards for maintenance and retail fueling environments.
  • Sound knowledge of hazard identification and safe work practices in retail and light industrial settings.
  • Ability to learn and navigate cloud-based ticketing systems (Service Channel, Owl Services) and mobile apps (iPad work orders).
  • Excellent customer service orientation, maintain professional demeanor with station staff and customers.
  • Proficient Microsoft Office Suite skills, including editing and proofreading.
  • Ability to maintain automated and manual record keeping systems.
  • Strong sense of team spirit and ability to transfer it to others.

  • Willingness to maintain or increase skills.
  • Must be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) within sixty days of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior relevant experience in the energy, retail or similar industries are preferred.
  • Prior relevant experience in retail fueling, oil & gas, or related energy industries is strongly preferred.
  • Prior OHSA/HIOSH TRAINING, prior fueling industry experience, HVAC/plumbing experience is strongly preferred.
  • Previous forklift operation experience preferred, certification is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Perform all maintenance tasks in compliance with OSHA, HIOSH, EPA, and IES safety standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain a strong safety culture by following all safety protocols, using proper PPE, and identifying and reporting actual or potential hazards or violations to management.
  • Actively support safe work practices and assist in reinforcing safety awareness among station staff in alignment with IES core safety values.
  • Provide basic guidance on troubleshooting (power cycle, check power source) when asked, but make clear that repairs are your responsibility.
  • Maintain regular communication to understand patterns, frequency of issues, and perceptions of station condition and safety.
  • Respond promptly to urgent maintenance requests and emergencies, including during off-hours, weekends, or natural disasters.
  • Prioritize and address issues that could impact station operations or safety to ensure timely restoration and minimal disruption.
  • Works effectively with coworkers and others by sharing ideas in a constructive, positive manner; listening to and objectively considering ideas and suggestions from others; keeping commitments; keeping others informed of work progress and issues; addressing problems and issues constructively to find mutually acceptable and practical solutions; and respecting the diversity of the IES workforce in actions, words, and deeds.
  • Execute general maintenance and handyman tasks including minor plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, painting, and other repairs.
  • Ensure facility issues are addressed in a timely, cost-effective manner to keep operations running efficiently.
  • Conduct routine preventative maintenance inspections and services on equipment, systems, and facilities.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and plumbing issues; perform root-cause analysis and document findings.
  • Utilize predictive maintenance tools to prioritize work, minimize downtime, and improve overall system performance.
  • Perform regular, comprehensive facility inspections to identify maintenance issues and safety hazards.
  • Maintain overall cleanliness, functionality, and appearance of station facilities, including signage, walls, doors, fixtures, and grounds, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Report findings (with photos) through the ticketing system and follow up to ensure timely resolution.
  • Partner with the Retail Maintenance Coordinator to schedule and coordinate specialized repairs (e.g., HVAC, electrical, plumbing) through the contractor network.
  • Provide clear asset history and detailed issue descriptions, track progress, and document outcomes to support efficient resolution and continuous improvement.
  • Maintain inventory of maintenance tools, equipment, and supplies, ensuring all items are available and in proper working condition.
  • Replenish stock as needed and support warehouse operations, including loading/unloading trucks, forklift use, and maintaining an organized workspace.
  • Utilize Service Channel to log work orders, document repairs, and capture detailed records (asset ID, work performed, time, parts, root cause, and follow-up actions).
  • Contribute to asset management by providing data on installation dates, condition, service history, and expected lifecycle to support predictive maintenance, master asset tracking, and replacement planning.
  • Contribute to process improvement by providing feedback on system usability, efficiency, and effectiveness.
  • Share observations on asset reliability, contractor performance, and operational trends.
  • Frequent travel to station locations on Oahu and neighbor islands as required.
  • Performs a variety of special assignments as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
