About The Position

The Maintenance employee supports the day-to-day upkeep and cleanliness of The Samaritan Inn’s facilities and grounds, including the shelter, thrift store, Gateway Apartments, and vehicle fleet. This hands-on role involves routine maintenance, landscaping, and light repairs, while also helping to transport and manage donations. The Maintenance employee collaborates with staff, volunteers, program participants, and vendors to maintain a safe, functional, and welcoming environment. The ideal candidate is a team player with strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects independently. A commitment to cost efficiency, community service, and respect for volunteers is essential to success in this role.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in general maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of basic repair methods in plumbing, electrical, drywall, painting, and carpentry.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in residential, nonprofit, or shelter environments.
  • Experience with vehicle or fleet maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general maintenance and repairs across all facilities (shelter, thrift store, Gateway Apartments), including light electrical, plumbing, painting, drywall, carpentry, and make-ready tasks.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and functionality of exterior grounds, including mowing, edging, and landscaping at all locations.
  • Respond to maintenance emergencies promptly and assist in planning for long-term facilities upkeep and repair projects.
  • Coordinate with staff, program participants, and volunteers to complete facility-related tasks and ensure a clean, safe, and welcoming environment.
  • Assist in managing the organization’s vehicle fleet, including routine service, scheduling repairs, and transporting items as needed.
  • Support donation logistics, including organizing bins, transporting items to the thrift store, coordinating drivers, and distributing excess donations appropriately.
  • Track and prioritize maintenance needs in collaboration with the Director of Operations, while managing time effectively to meet multiple deadlines.
  • Operate tools and equipment safely and effectively, including lawnmowers, weed eaters, drills, chainsaws, and other power tools.
  • Maintain cost efficiency and work within budget, ensuring materials and resources are used responsibly.
  • Model professional behavior and respectful communication, especially in interactions with volunteers, clients, and vendors.
