About The Position

The Recreation, Cultural and Facility Services department is responsible for building a healthy, inclusive and vibrant City, as well as ensuring that communities, residents and visitors have access to the recreation and cultural places, programs, events and services that allow them to experience all the benefits the City has to offer, and overseeing Buildings and Facilities Management for improved service delivery integration, ensuring the best possible client experience in City facilities. Under the guidance of a Program Coordinator or other supervisor, you are responsible for assisting with planning and implementing program content and for the instruction, coaching or coordination of introductory specialty sport/art programs and/or summer camps (i.e. tennis, volleyball, hockey camp, dance, art, etc.) to ensure participants have a safe and enjoyable camp experience. Work is performed in accordance with related legislation, policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 16 years
  • High School Student - minimum Grade 10
  • Student must be returning to school in the fall
  • Less than 4 months of related experience
  • Demonstrated experience in sport specialty area
  • Current Standard First Aid, CPR-C and AED certificates
  • AODA Accessibility/IASR Training
  • Strong background and understanding of specialty area
  • Demonstrated awareness of safety/ security during programs
  • Understanding the development and recreational needs of children
  • Must possess the training, experience and knowledge to organize the work and its performance
  • Must be familiar with applicable health and safety legislation, have knowledge of any potential or actual danger to health or safety in the workplace, and have knowledge of appropriate actions to be taken in order to ensure the health and safety of staff in accordance with applicable legislation and City policies and procedures
  • Ability to work in a team setting or independently
  • Maintain a fun and safe environment
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, leadership, organizational and programming skills
  • Experience working with preschoolers and/or school age children and/or youth
  • Ability to operate any required tools/equipment
  • Ability to follow verbal and/or written directions/procedures
  • Technical skills for the appropriate program

Nice To Haves

  • Appropriate coaching certification in a relevant specialty recreation/sports program is desirable
  • May require sport/art specific equipment as required to demonstrate & teach the skills, i.e. dance shoes, helmet, hockey equipment, in-line skates
