About The Position
WeVote is a nonpartisan civic technology nonprofit that builds digital tools to provide voters with trusted election information and encourage civic engagement. The volunteer Editor-in-Chief will lead WeVote's editorial vision and content strategy across its blogs, newsletters, thought leadership initiatives, and voter education programs. The role shapes organizational messaging, sets editorial standards, and provides strategic leadership to volunteer writers, editors, researchers, and other content contributors. The Editor-in-Chief will help position WeVote as a trusted voice in civic technology, voter education, and democratic participation. This includes working with organizational leaders and teams across communications, political data, product, and marketing while preserving editorial independence and integrity. The position is remote, with U.S.-based volunteers preferred, and requires approximately 5–10 hours per week. It is unpaid.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of experience in journalism, publishing, editorial leadership, digital media, content strategy, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience leading editorial teams, setting publication strategy, and managing content quality across multiple channels.
- Deep understanding of editorial ethics, fact-checking standards, audience engagement, and responsible reporting practices.
- Experience developing content strategies that grow audience engagement, increase readership, and strengthen organizational visibility.
- Outstanding editorial, writing, copyediting, and storytelling skills, with meticulous attention to accuracy and clarity.
- Passion for voter education, civic engagement, and democracy, and commitment to objective, impartial editorial standards.
- Ability to lead volunteer contributors and collaborate across distributed teams in a remote environment.
Responsibilities
- Develop and oversee WeVote's editorial direction, ensuring content aligns with its mission to educate, engage, and empower voters through trusted, nonpartisan information.
- Establish and uphold editorial standards, journalistic ethics, fact-checking protocols, and style guidelines.
- Identify key civic, democracy, voting, and technology topics for blogs, newsletters, and educational content.
- Lead, mentor, and provide strategic direction to volunteer editors, writers, researchers, and content creators.
- Develop editorial initiatives and strategic storytelling that establish WeVote as a trusted voice in civic technology, voter education, and democratic participation.
- Collaborate with executive, communications, political data, product, and marketing leaders to support organizational goals while maintaining editorial independence and integrity.
- Provide final editorial oversight for major publications, feature stories, opinion pieces, and strategic communications before publication.
