Requirements

  • Current and valid state Registered Nurse license.
  • Current BLS certificate upon hire and maintain current.
  • Current ACLS certificate 30 days upon hire and maintain current.
  • Current PALS certificate and/or ENPC required 30 days upon hire and maintain current.
  • Minimum of one year experience as a staff nurse RN in an acute care hospital setting; E.R. setting preferred.
  • Completion of preceptor class.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN) Required

Nice To Haves

  • In Paramedic Base Station ED: MICN within 12 months of hire and maintain current.
  • EDAP certified facilities: Completion of emergency pediatric course 1 and 2 within 6 months of hire.
  • Non-OB facilities: NRP certificate 30 days upon hire and maintain current.
  • Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) Certification within 12 months of hire required.

Responsibilities

  • Functions as a teacher and mentor in guiding, directing and supervising technical nursing activities of the nurse preceptee.
  • Provides guidance and consultation when needed, regarding effective patient care and scope of practice.
  • Creates formal and informal learning opportunities for peers regarding practice issues, technology and/or current research, identifies and intervenes when staff weaknesses are identified.
  • Responsible for the oversight of the preceptee in the delivery of safe patient care utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation.
  • Directly responsible for the care given to his/her assigned patients.
  • Communicates with the physician, nurse director, coworkers about changes in the patient’s clinical condition including hemodynamic monitoring, results of diagnostic studies and abnormal results and symptomatology.
  • Able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition and/or response to treatment.
  • Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Works collaboratively with patients, patients’ family, significant other(s) and hospital staff to achieve goals and outcomes.
