About The Position
At Woodbridge Aquarium & Wildlife Center, Animal Keepers provide hands-on animal care while helping guests connect with wildlife and learn about conservation. The role involves caring for a diverse collection of animals, observing their behavior and health, maintaining habitats, and supporting animal movements and routine care. Keepers also engage guests throughout the facility, sharing animal stories and conservation messages and helping visitors understand animal care. The position supports the organization’s mission and requires following animal-welfare, safety, and emergency procedures in a dynamic, guest-facing environment. Keepers collaborate with Animal Care, Guest Services, and leadership teams, participate in training, and build knowledge and skills over time. The schedule is flexible, with shifts that may vary based on operational needs and required work on weekends and holidays.
Requirements
- Degree in Zoology, Marine Biology, Animal Science, or a related field.
- Passion for animal care, education, and conservation.
- Comfort working in a guest-facing, interactive environment.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Willingness to learn, take direction, and follow established procedures.
- Ability to work on your feet indoors and outdoors in a physically active role.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work around animals, water systems, cleaning agents, and food preparation areas.
- Ability to stay alert and responsive in a fast-paced, guest-facing environment.
- Flexible availability, including weekends and holidays; reliability is essential.

- Hands-on animal experience in a professional, academic, or volunteer setting.
- Experience in education, public speaking, or customer service.
- Background in biology, animal science, or environmental education.
Responsibilities
- Provide daily animal care, including feeding, cleaning, habitat maintenance, and enrichment.
- Follow established procedures to support animal welfare and safety.
- Observe animals and report changes in behavior, appetite, or health.
- Support animal movements, introductions, and routine care activities.
- Engage guests and share animal stories, facts, and conservation messaging.
- Help guests understand animal care and conservation efforts.
- Maintain guest safety and exhibit boundaries.
- Support the organization’s mission and promote wildlife conservation and responsible stewardship.
- Follow safety protocols, PPE requirements, and emergency procedures.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe animal care areas.
- Respond to changing environments to protect animals and guests.
- Participate in drills, training, and ongoing safety education.
- Learn and apply animal care techniques, handling skills, and education strategies; seek feedback and build knowledge across species, habitats, and conservation topics.
- Collaborate with Animal Care, Guest Services, and leadership teams; communicate clearly and contribute to a positive team environment.
- Work a flexible schedule that includes weekends and holidays, with shifts varying according to operational needs.
