About The Position
Dark Horse Companies, a Jones Capital company providing right-of-way vegetation management and powerline construction services to utilities across the Southeast, is seeking a detail-oriented Staff Accountant for its growing, multi-entity business. Based in the Hattiesburg, Mississippi office, this hands-on, high-visibility role owns day-to-day financial operations and works directly with the VP of Finance. The position provides exposure to job costing, multi-entity accounting, and operational activities, with room to take on more responsibility as the company scales. The role includes travel to support the company’s Tennessee operations and learn the business for 1–2 weeks per year. Requirements
- At least 3 years of accounting experience.
- Strong Excel skills.
- Comfort managing high transaction volume and multiple entities.
- Ability to manage recurring deadlines with minimal oversight.
- Willingness to travel 1–2 weeks per year to support Tennessee operations.
Nice To Haves
- Experience in construction, field services, or project-based industries.
- CPA or CPA candidate.
- Experience with NetSuite or a similar ERP.
Responsibilities
- Reconcile bank accounts and manage credit card activity across multiple entities.
- Prepare and issue customer invoices and manage accounts receivable, including collections follow-up.
- Process vendor invoices and manage accounts payable across entities and job classes.
- Support payroll-related accounting entries.
- Support job costing processes and profitability reporting.
- Review general ledger coding for accuracy across projects and crews.
- Assist with recurring operational reporting.
- Assist with regular tax filings and other compliance requirements.
- Support insurance and equipment recordkeeping.
- Help with job and crew setup in company systems.
