Transporter - General Service

Mayo Clinic•Rochester, MN
•$20 - $26•Onsite

About The Position

The Transporter provides safe and efficient transportation of patients, visitors, and patient-related items throughout the Mayo Clinic campus. The role involves direct patient contact and frequent coordination with nurses, radiology technicians, desk staff, door attendants, dispatch, and other team members. Work assignments are received primarily through an iPhone and pager; transport requests may also be managed through computers or by telephone with dispatch. The employee works independently and as part of a team, with minimal supervision. The position requires substantial walking and standing, frequent pushing and pulling of patients, and safe operation of multiple types of motorized patient transport equipment. Transporters disinfect equipment after each use, request maintenance when needed, and perform daily wheelchair roundups. They transport patients using oxygen, IV pumps, wound vacs, monitors, and other special equipment; help patients move into and out of wheelchairs and stretchers; verify patient identity using two identifiers; and follow isolation precautions. Oxygen needs must be confirmed with a nurse before transport, and patient transfers between beds and stretchers require a slider board or slider sheet and assistance from other care team members. Transporters communicate patient information to appropriate staff during inpatient pick-up and drop-off. Transporters may assist patients experiencing symptoms during transit, transport patients on monitor carts to and from the ICU with a nurse and/or respiratory therapist, and continuously monitor a patient's condition when care staff are not accompanying them. They may need to call a code blue if medical staff are required to evaluate a patient's condition. The role includes at least 80 hours of on-the-job training. Schedules may include days, evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays, with rotating days off. Staff may also be required to attend meetings outside their usual schedule or help train new employees.
