The Transporter safely and efficiently transports patients, visitors, and patient-related items throughout the Mayo Clinic campus. The role involves direct patient contact and frequent coordination with nurses, radiology technicians, desk staff, door attendants, dispatch, and other care team members. Assignments are primarily received through an iPhone and pager; transport requests may also be entered using computers or coordinated by telephone. Employees must work independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision. Transporters move patients using multiple types of motorized patient transport equipment, assist patients into and out of wheelchairs and stretchers, and use slider boards and slider sheets with other care team members to transfer patients to and from beds or stretchers. They may transport patients using oxygen, intravenous pumps, wound vacs, monitors, and other special equipment. Patient identity must be confirmed using two identifiers, and oxygen levels must be confirmed with a nurse before transporting a patient receiving oxygen. Employees must follow medical isolation precautions, communicate patient status and handoffs to appropriate staff, monitor patients when unaccompanied by care staff, and call a code blue if medical staff are needed to assess a patient during transport. The work is physically demanding: employees walk or stand 10–12 miles per eight-hour shift, frequently push or pull patients weighing up to 200 pounds, and occasionally handle loads up to or exceeding 350 pounds. The position requires fine motor control, full use of the hands, repetitive wrist, elbow, and foot movements, and frequent trunk rotation, twisting, and reaching. Employees disinfect equipment after each patient use, request maintenance when needed, and perform daily wheelchair roundups to General Service storage areas or designated floors. The schedule may include days, evenings, overnights, weekends, holidays, and rotating days off. Employees may attend meetings outside their usual schedule and assist with training new employees. At least 80 hours of on-the-job training is required to perform basic job functions. This is a limited-tenure position. Employees are regular employees during the tenure, but employment ends on the established end date, approximately 24 months from hire. Employees commit to remain in the position until the tenure ends before becoming eligible to transfer to another role. After the assignment, employees must secure another Mayo Clinic role through the vacancy process or employment will end.
