The Transporter has direct patient contact and is responsible for safely and efficiently transporting patients, visitors, and patient-related items throughout the Mayo Clinic campus. The role involves frequent interaction with nurses, radiology technicians, desk staff, door attendants, dispatch staff, and other team members. Work assignments are primarily received through an iPhone and pager; transport requests may also be entered or managed using computers or coordinated by telephone. Employees must work independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision. Transporters operate multiple types of motorized patient transport equipment and assist patients with mobility and transfers. They transport patients who may require oxygen, intravenous pumps, wound vacs, monitors, or other special equipment, and follow patient identification and medical isolation procedures. For oxygen-dependent patients, staff must confirm with a nurse that at least 30 minutes of oxygen is available before transport. Transfers between beds and stretchers require slider boards and slider sheets, with assistance from other care team members. Transporters communicate relevant information to staff at inpatient pickup and drop-off, monitor patients when unaccompanied by patient-care staff, and may call a code blue if medical staff are needed to assess a patient. The position requires standing and/or walking 10–12 miles per 8-hour shift, frequent pushing or pulling of patients weighing up to 200 pounds, and occasional handling of patients weighing up to or exceeding 350 pounds. It also requires fine motor control to operate equipment, full use of the hands, and repetitive wrist, elbow, foot, and trunk movements. Employees disinfect equipment after each patient use, request maintenance when needed, and perform daily wheelchair roundups. Work schedules may include days, evenings, overnights, holidays, and weekends, with rotating days off. Employees may need to attend meetings outside their normal schedule or help train new employees. At least 80 hours of on-the-job training is required to perform basic job functions. This is a limited-tenure position. Employees are categorized as regular employees during the tenure, but employment ends on the established end date. The tenure is approximately 24 months from the hire date, and employees commit to remaining in the role through its end before becoming eligible to transfer to another position. After the assignment, employees are responsible for securing another Mayo Clinic role through the job vacancy process or their employment ends. The position is not eligible for visa sponsorship or transfer, and Mayo Clinic does not participate in the F-1 STEM OPT extension program.
