The Transporter’s primary function is to safely and efficiently transport patients, visitors, and patient-related items throughout the Mayo Clinic campus. The role involves frequent interaction with nurses, radiology technicians, desk staff, door attendants, and other team members. Work assignments are received primarily through an iPhone and pager, and the employee must work independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision. Transport requests may also be entered or managed using computers or coordinated with dispatch by telephone. The position involves standing and/or walking 10–12 miles per eight-hour shift; frequently pushing or pulling patients weighing up to 200 pounds; and occasionally pushing or pulling patients weighing up to or exceeding 350 pounds. Employees must safely operate multiple types of motorized patient transport equipment and use equipment such as slider boards and slider sheets to transfer patients with assistance from other care team members. Transporters also assist patients into and out of wheelchairs and stretchers, perform wheelchair roundups, disinfect equipment after each use, and request maintenance when needed. Transporters may move patients using oxygen, intravenous pumps, wound vacs, monitors, or other special equipment. They must verify patient identity using two identifiers, confirm with a nurse that a patient on oxygen has at least 30 minutes of oxygen before transport, follow medical isolation precautions, and communicate details to appropriate staff during inpatient pickups and drop-offs. They may assist patients who experience symptoms in transit, transport patients on monitor carts with nurse and/or respiratory therapist accompaniment when required, monitor patients when care staff are not accompanying them, and call a code blue if medical staff are needed to evaluate a patient’s condition. The role requires at least 80 hours of on-the-job training for basic job functions. Working hours may include days, evenings, overnights, holidays, and weekends, with rotating days off. Employees may need to attend meetings outside their normal schedule and assist with training new employees. This is a limited-tenure position: employees are regular employees during the tenure, but employment ends at the established end date, approximately 24 months after hire. Employees commit to remain in the position through the tenure before becoming eligible to transfer to another position. Afterward, they must secure another Mayo Clinic role through the job vacancy process or employment will end.
