Transporter - General Service

Mayo Clinic•Rochester, MN
•$20 - $26•Onsite

About The Position

The Transporter provides direct patient contact and transports patients, visitors, and patient-related items throughout the Mayo Clinic campus safely and efficiently. The role involves frequent interaction with nurses, radiology technicians, desk staff, door attendants, dispatch staff, and other care team members. Work assignments are received primarily through an iPhone and pager, with transport requests managed through computers and/or telephone communication with dispatch. The employee works independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision. Transporters operate multiple types of motorized patient transport equipment and assist patients with transfers to and from wheelchairs and stretchers. They transport patients using oxygen, intravenous pumps, wound vacs, and other special equipment; follow isolation precautions; use two identifiers to confirm patient identity; and communicate relevant information to staff during patient pickup and drop-off. When patients require oxygen, transporters confirm with a nurse that at least 30 minutes of oxygen is available before transport. For transfers between beds and stretchers, they use slider boards and sheets with assistance from other care team members. Some transports require a nurse and/or respiratory therapist to accompany the patient, and transporters may need to monitor a patient’s condition or call a code blue if medical staff are needed. The job also includes disinfecting equipment after each patient use, requesting maintenance when needed, and performing daily wheelchair roundups. The physical demands include standing and/or walking 10–12 miles per 8-hour shift, frequently pushing or pulling patients weighing up to 200 pounds and occasionally up to or exceeding 350 pounds, and performing repetitive hand, wrist, elbow, foot, and trunk movements. At least 80 hours of on-the-job training is required to perform basic job functions. Work hours may include days, evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays, with rotating days off. Staff may also be asked to attend meetings outside their normal schedule or help train new employees.
