This position involves bringing the agricultural and domestic programs at Hunter’s Home to life through interpretation, programs, and demonstrations. The interpreter will assist site staff with animal husbandry, including feeding, wellness checks, and daily working of animals. They will also assist with agricultural management and upkeep of the farm, including field management, fence work, and haying, while ensuring the safety of livestock and visitors. The role requires learning the history of Hunter’s Home and its inhabitants to provide accurate and engaging tours to visitors, students, and tour groups of all ages and abilities. The interpreter will respond to visitor questions about the site, its inhabitants, artifacts, and the economic and cultural development of the Cherokee Nation and its animals. Occasional assistance with opening and closing the site, as well as developing, setting up, executing, and taking down demonstrations, workshops, and special events centered on 19th-century daily life is expected. The position requires wearing appropriate 19th-century period clothing in diverse weather conditions, researching and developing new programming, and learning/demonstrating mid-19th-century skills. Assisting with ticket sales is also part of the duties.
