This position brings the agricultural and domestic programs at Hunter’s Home to life through interpretation, programs, and demonstrations. The Historical Interpreter will assist site staff with the management of animal husbandry functions, including feeding, wellness checks, and daily working of animals. They will also assist with agricultural management and upkeep of the farm, including field management, fence work, and haying. In collaboration with the Site Director, the interpreter will research and develop programming and tours focused on mid-19th century agricultural and domestic practices. A key responsibility is ensuring the safety of both livestock and visitors. The role requires learning the history of Hunter’s Home and its inhabitants to provide accurate and engaging tours to visitors, students, and tour groups of all ages and abilities. The interpreter will respond to visitor questions about the site, its inhabitants, artifacts, and the economic and cultural development of the Cherokee Nation and its animals. Additionally, they will assist with the daily opening and closing of the site, and the development, setup, execution, and takedown of demonstrations, workshops, and special events. The role involves dressing in appropriate 19th-century period clothing in diverse weather conditions, researching and developing new programming, and learning/demonstrating mid-19th-century skills. The interpreter will also assist with and coach volunteers to develop their tours and oversee the site’s social media presence on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, including regular editing and posting. Assisting with ticket sales is also part of the duties.
