About The Position

This is a temporary position with no leave or retirement benefits. Temporary employees working an annual average of 30 or more hours per week may be eligible for health insurance coverage under the High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). This position is with NC DNCR – Historic Sites, located at 169 Broad Street, Milton NC, Caswell County. The Department of Natural and Cultural Resources – Historic Sites is seeking a temporary, part-time Historical Interpreter to provide historically accurate guided tours through the site buildings in Milton. The selected candidate will schedule and conduct adult and school group tours and off-site programs. As the Interpreter, they will greet visitors, provide gift shop support, and assist in the upkeep of structures and grounds. Job-specific training will be provided. The work schedule averages three days per week, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with hours on Saturdays and half-days on Sundays.

Requirements

• High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience in giving museum tours; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Must be available to work weekends.
• Must be able to walk extensively and negotiate tours through two buildings.

Nice To Haves

• A background in history, African American history, public history, and/or other related fields.
• Ability to develop and maintain effective work relationships and deliver great customer service.
• Ability to speak effectively and engage a wide variety of people, and adapt historical tours to age, interest level, special interests, or time constraints.
