About The Position

The Historic Interpreter III will research and create new fee-based educational programs for Roanoke Island Festival Park. The position should have considerable knowledge of how to develop, coordinate and implement programs that appeal to visitors of all ages. The position will also provide collaborative leadership in historic research and the dissemination of acquired knowledge and skills, the presentation of public educational programs throughout the facility, the innovative development and implementation of ongoing and new public programs and events and the proactive implementation of guest services and interpretative standards and organizational expectations. They should have a working knowledge of 16th century history and a willingness to dress in period costume. A proven record of developing and implementing educational and fun programs for large groups. The position reports to the Manager of Education and interpretation.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND four years of experience in giving or developing museum tours; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be available to work the schedule of Tuesday - Saturday 8:45 am - 5:15pm with a 30-minute lunch, and occasional evening, weekend and holiday work required as needed.
  • Must be able to work outside in extreme heat, cold and inclement weather. Some work is performed in climate-controlled areas.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time and perform medium physical tasks with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to dress in period costume.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of historic interpretation, NC history and/or public history.
  • Demonstrated experience developing educational programs.
  • Demonstrated experience with public speaking and/or extensive customer engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, coordinate and implement educational programs for visitors to Roanoke Island Festival Park.
  • Engage with park guests to provide accurate historical interpretation and address questions about 16th century life on Roanoke Island.
  • Develop, coordinate and implement outreach programs to grow awareness of the park.
  • Assist in the management of group tours, including school groups.
  • Perform research as needed.
