About The Position

The Historical Interpreter at Fort Towson, under the Site Director, is responsible for engaging with visitors, leading living history programs, conducting historical research, preparing for public events, performing museum duties, creating social media content, and maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of assigned work areas. This role involves interacting with the public, researching historical information, and contributing to the educational mission of the Oklahoma Historical Society.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in History or related field.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain positive relations with visitors, being courteous, respectful, and exercising flexibility to best serve the public during all work activities.
  • Assist with and lead living history programs, both those in place and newly created ones, for onsite and outreach use.
  • Research and compile historical information pertaining to the sites and topics overseen by the FTHS staff, including physical and digital content.
  • Prepare for public programs/presentations/events and exhibition/displays relating to the sites.
  • Lead tours of the museum and site(s) to groups and individual adults and children.
  • Perform museum duties, including cash register operation, securing and processing revenue according to policy and procedure, assisting with collections, assisting with the museum store, and answering the phone.
  • Create educational posts and videos for social media platforms including Facebook and YouTube while following the OHS Style Guide and Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Conduct custodial tasks in assigned work areas including the museum, Sutler Store, and other structures and areas, contributing to a safe, secure, clean, and orderly environment for the public and staff.
  • Oversee research requests submitted by the public via email, phone, in person, and Facebook messenger, focusing on people and history related to the military post, Doaksville, Doaksville cemetery, pre-statehood history of the basic area, Rose Hill, and the Heroine.
  • Travel to other OHS sites and museums to help with events.
  • Travel to other non-OHS institutions, organizations, museums, and sites to help with their events or promote FTHS.
  • Drive or learn to drive a dually truck.
  • Walk the site for inspiration and to identify improvements.
